신라 조기양식토기의 설정과 편년

The Identification and Chronology of Incipient Silla Style Pottery

이 논문에서는 경주지역에서 원삼국시대 토기에 이어서 신라 전기양식토기 출현 무렵까지 사용된 토기들을 중심으로 신라 조기양식토기를 설정하고 그 편년을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 경주지역의 신라 조기양식토기는 2기 4단계로 구분되었으며, 서기 3세기 중엽에 출현하여 4세기 전엽까지 사용되다가 4세기 중엽 신라 전기양식토기로 발전된 것으로 파악되었다. 이어서 영남지방에서 신라ㆍ가야 조기양식토기의 전개과정을 검토하여 보았는데, 먼저 경주와 김해ㆍ부산지역을 중심으로 신라ㆍ가야 조기양식토기가 출현하였으며, 양 지역의 토기는 공통성이 많았지만 차이점도 있었고, 그 차이는 시기가 내려오면서 더욱 심화되었다. 즉, 신라 조기양식토기와 가야 조기양식토기로 분화되어 나갔던 것이다. 이후 낙동강 서쪽에서는 합천 옥전지역, 함안지역, 서부경남지역 등의 지역양식 토기가 분립되었다. 이와 같이 신라ㆍ가야 조기양식토기는 크게는 영남지방 공통의 토기양식이지만, 시차를 두고 단계적으로 크고작은 지역양식이 분화되어 나갔던 것을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 이 논문에서는 경주지역 이외 낙동강 동쪽지역의 지역양식 분화양상이나 경주의 신라 조기양식토기가 주변지역으로 확산되어간 양상은 검토하지 못하였다. 이를 밝히는 것은 앞으로의 과제이다.

This paper aims to identify and establish a chronological scheme for the Incipient style pottery of Silla by examining the pottery of the Gyeongju region which dates from the Proto-Three Kingdoms period up to the appearance of the Early Silla ceramic style. Based on the results of the study, the Incipient Silla style pottery of the Gyeongju region can be divided into two phases, comprising a total of four sub-phases. This style of pottery first appeared in the mid-third century CE, continued to be used until the early fourth century, and developed into the Early Silla ceramic style around the mid-fourth century. The development of the Incipient SillaㆍGaya ceramic style in the Yeongnam region was also examined in this paper. It is in the Gyeongju and GimhaeㆍBusan regions that the pottery of the Proto-Three Kingdoms period came to be replaced by Incipient SillaㆍGaya style pottery. The pottery of the two regions was different in some aspects but similar in many other aspects, and it is these differences that became more marked with the passage of time. In other words, it became possible to distinguish the Incipient Silla ceramic style from the Incipient Gaya ceramic style. Later, regional ceramic styles came to be established in the region west of the Nakdong River, at Okjeon in the Habchon area, in the Haman area and in the western Gyeongnam area. This indicates that although the Incipient SillaㆍGaya ceramic style can broadly be regarded as a ceramic style common to the Yeongnam region, it was gradually divided into number of greater and lesser regional ceramic styles. However, the way in which this differentiation of regional ceramic styles took place east of the Nakdong river (apart from in the Gyeongju region) was not examined in this paper, nor was way in which the Incipient Silla ceramic style of the Gyeongju region spread to the surrounding areas. These are issues that will need to be addressed in future studies.
