Production and purpose of bone awl in Neolithic age

골제 자돌구는 동물의 뼈로 만들어진 선단부가 뾰족한 골각기의 한 종류이다. 자돌구라는 명칭은 형태명으로 불리는 것이며, 이들 도구의 용도에 대한 문제는 연구자들 간에 뚜렷한 합의를 보지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 자돌구로 통칭되는 유물들도 형태적으로 차이가 분명히 있으며, 또한 각각의 형태에 따라 제작방식과 용도가 다르다는 점을 제작실험과 사용흔 분석을 통하여 분명히 하고자 한다. 상기한 점들을 검토하기 위해 먼저 자돌구들의 유형을 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 우선 자돌구들의 형태적 속성을 분류하고 이들 간에 빈번히 조합되는 부분을 묶어 유형으로 설정하였으며, 그 결과 본고에서는 자돌구의 유형을 6가지로 구분하였다. 제작실험에서는 실제사슴뼈를 이용한 자돌구제작이 이루어졌다. 사용된 사슴뼈의 부위는 요골, 척골, 경골, 중수골, 중족골이며, 각 뼈의 특성에 따른 자돌구 제작기법의 조합양상을 확인 할 수 있다. 용도의 분석에서는 제작된 6유형의 자돌구를 이용하여 실제 사용에 준하는 실험을 행하고, 사용된 부위의 현미경관찰과 실제 유물의 표면관찰에서 확인되는 양상을 비교하였다. 그 결과 1ㆍ2유형은 어로구로써 1유형은 역T자형조침, 2유형은 찔개살, 작살의 미늘, 결합식조침 침부 등과 같은 용도를 가지며, 3유형은 송곳, 4유형은 생활용구, 5유형은 예새 등, 6유형은 빗창의 용도를 가질 것으로 생각된다.

This study is conceptualized on the tools classified awl among the bone implement. The object of the study is an awl - bones which have a sharp point - which is a contrary to fishing hooks, harpoons and tools that hold unknown form. In this study, after classification of the form, I performed a restoration process with the real deer bones and use them in an experiment to reproduce awl. Futhermore, through the comparison analysis in usewear that existed on the real artifact surface, I was able to access its function. The following were among the findings. The form classification of awl are categorized according to their attributes analysis (process method, fore-end shape, cross section shape and its corre-lation). Through this way, I was able to classify 6 awl forms. Having classified the forms, I was able to do a variety of experiment: removing deerskin, piece of meat and periosteum, and the process of making tools that contain cutting and splitting of the bones. By doing so, I can acquire the reproduced awl that closely resembles real one. Executing the said experiment with reproduced awl,I was able to compare and analyze both its use-wear and pattern of use-wear on the artifact’s surface sa as to assume the function. Though smoewhat overtaxed, it can interpreted that on the whole, there has been a trend toward using purpose. On this basis, I assume that awl is divided into fishing tool, awl, gathering shellfish tool, a versatile tool.
