신라ㆍ가야의 경계로서 경주와 부산

가야의 멸망 이전 삼국시대 영남지역에 있었던 신라와 가야는 항상 고착되었다거나 서로 여집합인 관계도 아니었다. 신라와 가야로 불린 정치체는 유기체와 같이 시간에 따라 성장, 발전하였고 공간적으로도 유동성이 있었다. 이들을 서로 대립적 관계의 대등한 성격으로 파악한 것은 역사의 승자로 남은 斯盧-新羅 중심의 세계관, 즉 신라와 非新羅(가야)의 관점에 서서 신라의 성장과정을 설명하려 하였기 때문이다. 이를 설명하기 위한 고고학의 해석 틀로서는 종래 가야토기와 신라토기로 이분한 토기양식론, 착장형 장신구나마구 등을 이용한 위세품론이 첨병의 역할을 하였고 최근에는 경주 고유 묘제인 적석목곽묘에 대한 새로운 이해 관점들도 여기에 가세해왔다. 이러한 관점에 줄곧 비판적이었던 필자는 그간의 논고를 정리한 해석적인 입장을 명확히 밝힐 필요가 있어 본고를 작성하게 되었다. 이에 따라 먼저 토기양식론, 위세품론에 대한 문제 지적과 비판 견해를 제시하였다. 나아가 장법을 통해서 전기가야의 해체 이후,낙동강을 거슬러 올라가면서 후기가야가 성립하는 과정을 밝힘으로써 고총고분 성립기의 영남지역 정세를 재해석하였다. 후기가야성립기의 경주는 영남에서 중심으로 확실히 입지하였으며, 그 성장과정은 전ㆍ중ㆍ후기로 나눈 경주(신라)양식의 토기문화를 통해서도 파악할 수 있다. 이는 경주를 중심으로 한 신라의 사회발전과정과도 연동한다. 이를 가야와의 관련을 고려하여 ‘高塚古墳時代’라는개념으로 이해하고자 하였다. 가야지역 고총고분의 성쇠와 신라후기양식 토기의 확산과정은 신라와 가야의 경계를 가늠하는 유효한잣대로서 역할한다. 이러한 해석 관점에서, 또한 실제적인 경주의 성장과정을 설명하기 위해서, 경주 성장에 큰 지주 역할을 했던 부산의 성쇠를 경주와대비시킴으로써 예시코자 하였다. 전기가야 중심의 한 축이었던 부산은 고총고분 성립기에 중심인 경주에 비해 한 지역 세력으로 전락하며 그나마 유지되던 명맥은 연산동유적에서 고총고분의 축조가 중단되는 시점에서 완전 신라에 편입되었다. 부산이 가야의 한세력에서 신라가 된 시점이다. 이상이 본고에서 제시한 해석론의 요점이다.

The relationship of Silla and Gaya before the demise of Gaya was not always fixed or a complementary set between the two. The political system of Silla to Gaya was ogranic according to period and growth. It developedspatially and was fluid. Because it is historically seen as a relationship character of mutually oppositional paritythat centred on the world-view of the victor of Saro-Silla, I intend to explain the perspective of ‘Silla-not Silla’in the growth process of Silla. From the explanation of this from the framework of archaeological interpretation,I address the dichotomy of traditional Gaya and Silla pottery style theory, the theory of prestige artifacts and thewearing of ornaments or horse tack as an advance guard to join in on recent perspectives on new understandingsof the indigenous funerary rituals of the wooden chamber tombs of Gyeongju that are covered by stone andearthen mounds. From these perspectives, it is necessary to write this article to clearly elucidate my critical position on all ofthe arguments of interpretation that have been organized. Thus I start by putting forward critical points on problemsabout models of pottery style and prestige goods. I reinterpret he circumstances of the aftermath of the dismantlingof early Gaya through funerary methods that led to changes to the process of the establishment of lateGaya and the large-scale mounded tombs of the Yeongnam region. Gyeongju was the clearly the central positionof Yeongnam in the period of the establishment of late Gaya, and this process of growth can be understoodthrough the division of Gyeongju (Silla) pottery cultural style into early, middle, and late. This is linked to thetransitional process of social development of Silla with Gyeongju at the centre. It is through these points that Iconsider and understand the concept of the large-scale mounded tombs as related to Gaya. The rise and declineof large-scale mounded tombs and the process of the spread of the late Silla pottery style is estimated to a goodcriterion of the role of the border between Silla and Gaya. From the perspective of these interpretations, and also for the purpose of describing the real process of thegrowth of Gyeongju, the rise and decline of Busan for the grooming of Gyeongju is a good example of a suppor tfor the role it’s growth. Busan was an axis of early Gaya and in comparison with the centre of Gyeongju in theperiod of the establishment of large-scale mounded tombs, the strength of one region fell and the perspective ofthe lesser maintenance of existence in the building of the large-scale mounded tombs of the Yeonsan-dong sitewas halted as it was completely incorporated by Silla. One viewpoint is that Busan went from being a strength of Gaya to that of Silla. These are the essentials of the points that I make in this article about theory of interpretations.
