辰弁韓 ‘國’의 形成과 變動

이 논문은 辰弁韓 ‘國’의 성격과 변화과정에 대한 연구이다. 1970년대 말 80년대에 역사학계에서 고고학 자료를 일반적 진화발전도식에 대입시키는 해석을 시도한 바 있다. 고고학계에서는 1990년대에 접어들면서 ‘國’에 대해 접근할 때 어떤 질문을 던져야 하고 어떤 관점과 개념으로 접근해야 하는지에 대한 검토가 본격적으로 시작되었다. 이 때의 연구는 주로 일정 영역에 분포하는 분묘군을 분석하여 ‘國’이라는 정치체의 규모나 조직에 대해 논의한 것이었는데 이러한 접근은 현재로서 답보상태에 머물러 있는 듯하다. 이 논문은 진변한 ‘國’ 연구에 대한 돌파구를 모색하기 위해 작성되었다. 여기서는 진변한 ‘國’을 사회발전의 한 단계로 파악하지 않고 복합사회의 한 양상으로 간주하고 불균등하고 가변적인 복합사회의 변동과정에서 살펴야 한다고 보았다. 특정 역사적 맥락을 배경으로 한 권력관계와 사회적 행위자에 초점을 맞추어 접근할 것과 원사시대 주변사회에 대한 비교사적 연구가 진변한 ‘國’의 연구에 많은 참고가 될 것이라고 제안했다. 진변한 ‘國’의 실체와 변동에 대한 논의에서 이 논문은 첫째, 영역과 집단의 정체성, 둘째, 중심지의 형성과 국읍의 경제적, 정치ㆍ이념적 역할, 셋째, 분묘군과 수장묘에 나타난 사회적 위계와 지배 권력의 성격 등을 중심으로 검토를 진행해 보았다. 요약하면 정치체의 성장이 앞서갔던 영남 동남부지역에 있어서도 ‘國’의 규모나 조직적 특성은 불균등한 상태였고 각 ‘國’들의 성장과정도 상당한 차이가 있었음을 지적할 수 있었다. 특히 개별 ‘國’의 지리ㆍ생태적 배경, 자원의 분포와 생산체계의 발전, 사회적 네트워크상의 위치, 주변 ‘國’들과의 관계 및 통합의 여지 등에 따라 발전의 양상은 달랐던 것 같다.

This paper discusses how to approach the rise and development of Guk(國)s in Jinbyeon-han, a bundle of polities in the South-Eastern part of Korean Peninsular during the Proto-Three Kingdom period. First I suggest that it would be more helpful to understand the historical transformations of the Jinbyeon-han polities through the comparative studies of the socio-political developments in the ‘tribal-zones’ of the proto-historic period based on the social-actor perspectives rather than the systematic considerations about the evolutionary processes of the autonomous social entities. From the examinations on size, organization, and centralization of individual Guks, it could be suggested that they showed the different developmental trajectories according to the locations within the geographical settings and the social networks, the craft-specialization supported by the leaderships and the strategic self-representations of the tribal identities.
