사리불항마전승의 문예적 연변과 영향

A Study on the literary transformation and influence in transmission of Saribul(舍利佛)

이 논문은 사리불항마전승의 유통과 그 의미를 살핀 것이다. 먼저 이 전승의 계통을 추적하고, 한국과 중국을 아울러 연변 양상을 검토하였다. 이를 바탕으로 이 전승의 통시적인 영향관계를 확인해 보았다. 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사리불항마전승의 계통을 살폈다. 이 전승은 다양한 경전에 수록되어 있다. 그 중 ≪현우경≫에 실린 작품이 상세하다. 그래서 한국과 중국에서는 이 작품을 중심으로 유통되었다. 중국의 경우 경전의 작품에 변화를 주어 <항마변문>으로 유통되었고, 이 변문과 함께 변상(變相)도 유변되었다. 한국의 경우 경전의 유입과 함께 사리불항마전승이 유입되었을 것으로 본다. 하지만 중국과는 달리 독립 작품으로 유통되지 않고 ≪석보상절≫에 실려 다른 작품과 함께 향유되었다. 둘째, 사리불항마전승의 문예적 양상을 살폈다. 이 전승의 원형적인 이야기는 불경에 있다. 이 불경의 이야기이가 포교나 오락의 효과를 높이기 위하여 변문으로 변용되었다. 한국의 경우 ≪석보상절≫의 <사리부항마기>가 그러한 작품이다. 이에 반해 중국의 경우 다양한 변문이 전한다. 이 변문은 포교나 흥미를 위해 대중에게 공연되는 특징이 있다. 그러는 과정에서 효율성을 높이기 위해 그림이 병치되었다. 셋째, 사리불항마전승의 영향과 그 의미를 살펴보았다. 중국에서는 이 전승이 속문학인 변문으로 유통되다가 신마류(神魔類)의 고전소설에 영향을 끼쳤다. 우리의 경우 서사기법이나 전통이 이야기문학에 영향을 끼쳤다. 이 전승이 사찰건립담이라는 점에서 우리의 사찰연기담(寺刹緣起談)의 좋은 본보기가 될 수 있었다. 나아가 사리불과 노도차의 술법 대결이 서사관습이 되어 둔갑설화나 소설에 영향을 끼칠 수 있었다.

This paper examines the distribution and its meaning of transmission of Saribul. First, the system of this transmission was traced, and the aspects of change was reviewed throughout both Korea and China. Based on this, the relationship between the general effects of this transmission was checked. To sum up this discussions : First, the system of transmission of Saribul was observed. This transmission is contained in various scriptures. Among them, the works in the Hyeonugyeong are detailed. So, in Korea and China, it was distributed around this work. In the case of China, the scriptures were changed and distributed as Hangmabyeonmun, along with this Bianwen Buddhist painting was also distributed. In the case of Korea, it is believed that the transmission of Saribu was introduced along with the introduction of scriptures. Unlike China, however, it was not distributed as an independent work, but was included in the Seokbosangjeol, and enjoyed along with other works Secondly, the literature aspects of the transmission of Saribul was observed. The origianal story of this transmission lies in the Buddhist scriptures. The story of this Buddhist scripture was translated into Bianwen to enhance the effect of missionary work and entertainment. In Korea, Seokbosangjeol‘s Saribulhangmagi is such a work. On the other hand, China has a variety of Bianwen. This Bianwen is characterized by being performed to the public for missionary or interest. During this process picture, the accompanying text could have been combined. Third, the influence and meaning of the transmission of Saribul was observed. In China, this transmission was distributed as Bianwen which is a vulgar literature and influenced the classical novel of ghost. In our case, narrative techniques or traditions have influenced story literature. This transmission was a good example of our the story of building a temple in that it was a temple building story. Furthermore the sorcery battle between Saribul. and Nodocha became a bibliographic method, which could affect transform fabel or novel.
