한국개신교의 현대요가 수용에 대한 고찰

The Study on The Understanding to Modern Yoga of Korean Protestantism

2017년 9월 18일 한국 개신교 대한예수교장로회 통합(예장통합)교단은 교단 내 신자들의 요가를 금지하는 <요가에 관한 연구보고서>를 받아들였다. 각 종교나 교단의 요가 수용은 각 종교들의 교리 차이에 따라 다를 수 있다. 그러나 이 과정에서 요가를 평가할 때 객관적이고 정확한 정보와 사실을 기반으로 해야 함은 당연한 일이다. 그러나 금 번 예장통합의 결정은 주관적이고 부정확한 정보와 사실들을 통해 이루어 졌고, 이것은 요가의 본질에 대한 왜곡을 가져옴으로써 개신교도는 물론 일반인들에게도 요가에 대한 오해를 일으킬 소지가 없지 않다. 본 논문은 먼저 <요가에 관한 연구보고서>가 이용한 참고문헌의 객관성 및 학문적 불충분성을 비판했다. 다음으로 <요가에 관한 연구보고서>가 ① 요가의 기원, ② 인도 중요 문헌의 연대, ③ 한국요가 기원설에 대해 심대한 오류를 범하고 있음을 지적함으로써 이 보고서가 학문적인 신빙성을 가지지 못한 것임을 논증했다. 마지막으로 <요가에 관한 연구보고서>는 현대요가와 전통요가의 개념을 구분하지 못함으로써 그들이 금지시키려 하는 요가가 어떤 요가인지도 구분하지 못하는 오류를 범하고 있음을 논증하여 보고서의 논지가 처음부터 성립되지 못함을 보였다. 이를 통해 현대 한국에서 현대요가가 어떻게 수용되고 있는지를 보이고, 요가 왜곡에 대한 시정을 엄정한 학문적 기준을 가진 학회의 논문을 통해 예장통합 측에 엄중히 요구하려 한다.

The Presbyterian Church of Korea(TongHap) adopted the research report on yoga that prohibits the yoga practice of Presbyterian, 3 years ago(18, September, 2017). The acceptance or prohibition of yoga practice may differ along with doctrines of religions or orders. However, when they judge the acceptance or prohibition of it, the judgement must be based on objective and correct facts. But the prohibition of yoga practice of the Presbyterian Church of Korea(TongHap) was judged on an inaccurate facts. This prohibition may distort the facts on yoga, and lead to misunderstandings on yoga in Presbyterian, by extension, the public. This paper first criticizes the non-objectivity and insufficiency of reference materials used in The Research Report on Yoga of the Presbyterian Church of Korea(The Report), and the lack of academic base. Next, this paper points three inaccurate facts of The Report : ① the origin of yoga, ② the period of important classic texts in India, ③ the theory on the origin of Korean yoga, and by above criticism, this paper demonstrates that the Report has not academic bases. In the last, this paper demonstrates that the Report has mistaken not to understand what yoga that the Report prohibit is, because the Report not differ modern yoga from traditional yoga practices. By this paper, I demonstrates an example of acceptance of modern yoga in modern korean protestantism, and wish that The Presbyterian Church of Korea(TongHap) study on modern yoga more objectively and correctly.
