This talk presents the findings of a corpus study which has analyzed the usage patterns of three suggesting constructions (i.e., let’s X; what/how about X; why don’t you/we X) in the British National Corpus. The study has found the total of 6,604 cases of the three constructions and examined the contents and ways of suggestion. The results are discussed in three folds. First, the three construction vary in terms of token frequency, with the let’s X construction being the most frequent (4,140 cases) and the why don’t you/we X construction being the least frequent (476 cases). Second, the frequent types of verbs vary across the three constructions. Second, the semantic factors of each construction such as inclusiveness, newness, and degree of persuasion influence neighboring expressions and discourse structures. The findings lead us to pedagogical implications for teaching grammar and vocabulary to Korean primary school students.
