[온라인 영어교육] 초임교사가 마주한 온라인 영어 수업에서의 어려움과 극복방법

Difficulties faced by first year teacher teaching online English classes and some solutions to overcome the challenges

이 연구는 코로나 19로 인해 달라진 영어 학습 환경에서 초임교사로서 마주하는 온라인 영어 교육환경에서의 어려움, 극복 방법, 그리고 앞으로의 영어 수업 방향에 대해 구체적으로 논하고 있다. 처음 온라인 수업을 실시하면서 자율적인 학습의지가 없는 학생들은 학습을 포기하거나 생략하여 학습 결손이 발생했고, 상호작용을 위한 상대자의 배제로 인해authentic한 말하기 수업이 이루어지기 어려웠다. 특히, 1년차 초임교사로서 축적된 자료와 경험의 부족으로 비대면적 학습에서 개별아동을 위한 수준별 자료나 의미 있는 활동을 구현하기에는 어려움이 있었다. 그러나 충분한 실생활 맥락의 반영, 자발적인 영어 활용 기회 확대라는 영어교육의 중점사항을 잊지 않고, 비대면 수업이라는 특성을 최대한 활용하여 다양한 교수학습법과 자료의 변화를 시도했다. 구체적으로는 학습결손을 예방하기 위한 단계별quiz 과제 제공, 다양한 상황적 맥락이 담긴 영상 자료 제작, 영미 문화 교육을 보완하기 위한 매체의 활용 등 EFL 학습자들의 심리적 거리감을 좁히고자 노력한 덕분에 학생들의 적극적인 참여와 언어학습에 대한 열린 태도를 이끌어 낼 수 있었다. 그러나 비대면 학습이라는 특수성으로 인해 여전히 학습 격차 및 학습 결손 극복의 어려움, 말하기 능력 신장의 어려움이라는 한계는 존재한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 교사와 학생, 가정이라는 교육공동체의 지속적인 협력이 이루어진다면 비대면적 수업의 한계를 극복하고 앞으로의 사회에 적합한 새로운 온라인 교육의 지평을 열 수 있을 것이다.

This study illustrates the difficulties faced by first year teacher teaching online classes and some solutions to overcome the challenges. To mention the difficulties briefly, there happened to be distant learning gaps among students. Furthermore, due to COVID 19 prevention rules, students were not allowed to interact freely, leading to the lack of authentic communication. As a first year teacher who did not have accumulative knowledge or materials to face various students and their learning environment, it was a huge challenge. However, having language principles in mind, some solutions were sought to overcome the problems. For example, there were changes in learning materials and strategies. The teacher provided students with learning materials varied in different learning styles and levels. Students with low proficiency can solve the material by using the imagery evidence, and students with high proficiency can solve the material which is a bit higher than their ability. Also, the teacher constructed “Education of American Culture” by using the media such as you-tube. Therefore, students could lower their affective filter in dealing with English and get interested in learning the foreign language. In conclusion, despite all the limitations existing now in online classes, if the education community including teachers, students, and parents, collaborate in the learning process, it is possible to overcome the current challenges and build up the future of online English class.
