Status Quaestionis : John Chrysostom and Philosophical-Medical Therapy

최근 교부학계에서 고대후기 종교(기독교), 의학, 철학 간의 학제적 연구가 새로운 한 연구방법론으로 떠오르고 있다. 물론 그 초점이 아직 의학지식과 이론의 전용에 있기는 하지만 초대 기독교 저술가들에게 자주 등장하는 영혼과 몸, 즉 통전적인 치료에 대한 관심이 계속적으로 증가하고 있다. 본 논문은 고대 철학적-의학적 치료관점에서 동방교회 지도자인 요한 크리소스톰(John Chrysostom, c.349-407 C.E.)의 사상과 작품에 대한 새로운 연구들을 체계적으로 분석하고자 한다. 이 분야의 문헌고찰은 마이어(Wendy Mayer)에 의해 이루어졌지만 아직까지 국내에서는 이러한 작업은 없다. 필자는 국내 교부학계에 최신의 크리소스톰 연구경향을 소개할 뿐만 아니라 마이어의 분석 이후에 출판된 연구서들을 추가하여 보완하고자 한다. 또한 지금까지의 연구경향 고찰을 바탕으로 앞으로의 연구를 위한 몇 가지 제안을 제시할 것이다. 본 논문은 이러한 최근의 연구경향이 요한의 생애와 사상을 새롭게 볼 수 있는 가능성을 제시한다는 점을 보여 줄 것이다. 고대 철학과 의학에서의 통전적인 치료는 초기 기독교를 다시 볼 수 있는 잠재력 있는 방법론이다. 이러한 연구는 오늘날 한국교회에 우리의 자리를 다시 돌아보게 한다. 목회자는 무엇보다도 영혼의 치료자이며 교회는 각 성도들과 가정, 더 나아가 사회를 치료하는 임무를 감당해야 할 것이다. 교회는 성도들과 사회를 향해 세상의 행복담론을 뛰어넘는 참된 영적안식의 복음을 전해야 한다.

Recently, interdisciplinary research between religion, medicine, and philosophy has attracted much attention as a new methodology in Patritics scholarship. Although the focus is still on the appropriation of medical knowledge and theory, there is a continually growing body of literature on both bodily and psychic therapy, holistic treatment found frequently in early Christian writers. This article is to systematically investigate a new trend of studies on John Chrysostom(c.349-407 C.E.), a fourth-century eastern church father’s thought and works from the perspectives of ancient philosophical-medical therapy. Only Wendy Mayer surveys this field, but there is no attempt to analyze it in Korean scholarship. I undertake not only to introduce these refresh studies to Korean Patristics, but also to refine previous literature review by adding studies published after Mayer’s work. In addition, this paper will give some suggestion to how we take a step further on the basis of critical examination of previous studies. It will demonstrate that these recent works offer a possibility to newly understand John s life and ideas. Holistic treatment in ancient philosophy and medicine is a potential methodology to revisit early Christianity. This article tries to reconstruct our task in a society. A pastor is, above all, a healer of the soul, and the church should take responsibility for the therapy of individuals, family, and society. The church need to preach the gospel of true spiritual wellbeing toward both Christian and society which outnumbers the power of worldly discourse of happiness.
