An Approach to Public Archaeology Based on the Freesemester Education Program Making Use of Archaeological Site of Shell-middens

문화유산에 관한 대중적 관심이 증대되면서 문화유산의 보존과 활용에 대한 인식 역시 높아지고 있다. 특히 대중고고학(Public Archaeology)이라는 새로운 패러다임이 도입된 고고학계에는 학술적 측면 이외에‘사회적 활용’측면이 강조되고 있다. 공·사립박물관과 매장문화재조사기관은 다양한 교육 프로그램을 운영하며, 문화유산 분야로의 대중의 참여를 적극적으로 유도하고 있다. 그러나 지역의 사회문화적 환경에 따라 문화유산 향유의 기회가 상이하고, 문화유산 교육에의 접근 기회 역시 심한 편차가 있다. 필자들은 2015년 시작된 ‘자유학기제’교육 프로그램을 활용하여 고고학과 학교교육과의 연계 가능성에 주목하였다. 공교육의 교육적 보편성과 자유학기·년제 수업의 특성, 고고학이 지닌 교육적 가치를 결합하여 총 17차시의 패총유적 활용 고고학 교육 프로그램을 개발하였다. 현직 중학교 교사의 자문과 분석을 받아 프로그램의 학교교육 체제에서의 실현 가능성을 검토하였다. 수업 시연 및 프로그램 적용을 통한 결과를 도출하진 못했지만, 평가와 분석을 통해 실현 가능성을 상정해 볼 수 있었다. 지역 환경에 따른 교육 기회의 불균형을 해소하고 체계적인 문화유산 교육 프로그램 개발의 방향을 제기했다는 점에서 본 연구의 의미를 찾고 싶다. 진정한 의미의 대중고고학 실현을 위해 향후 보다 나은 교육 프로그램을 개발하고자 한다.

As public interest in cultural heritage rises, awareness of preservation and use of cultural heritage is increasing. In particular, in archaeological circle with a new paradigm of Public Archeology , social responsibility and role is emphasized in addition to the academic aspect of the discipline. Public and private museums and cultural heritage institutes run a variety of educational programs and actively induce public participation in the field of cultural heritage. However, opportunities for enjoying cultural heritage vary depending on the socio-cultural environments of the region, and opportunities for access to cultural heritage education is vary significantly, too. The authors focused on the possibility of linking archeology with school education by using the Free-semester System education program available in 2015. Combining the educational universality of middle school education with the characteristics of free-semester classes and the educational value of archeology, we designed and constructed an archaeology education program consisting of seventeen-week course schedule. Along with valuable advice and analysis, a current middle school teacher examined the feasibility of the program in the school education system. Unfortunately, it was not possible to derive results through class demonstration and application of the program. However, it was possible to suppose the feasibility through evaluation and analysis. We would like to find the meaning of this research in that it is an attempt to resolve the imbalanced educational opportunities to the local environments and that we propose the future direction of cultural heritage education.
