비평가들은 헨리 제임스의 가장 유명한 유령 소설인 ｢나사의 회전｣에 등장하는 환영적 실체를 재현하는 일련의 장면들의 모호한 의미, 특히 실재와 비실재로 구성된 환영적 실체의 양가적인 존재론적 양태에 대해 초점을 맞춰 논의해왔다. 하지만 실재와 비실재를 서로 배타적이고 양립 불가능한 개념들로 전제한 기존의 논의들에서는 둘이 존재론적, 인식론적으로 공존 가능성을 천착하지 못하는 결론에 그치는 경향이 두드러졌다. 이와 같은 이분법적인 존재와 세계 인식과는 반대로, 헨리 제임스는 ｢나사의 회전｣에서 실재와 비실재가 주체의 작인과 현실의 이해를 공동으로 구성하는 방식의 재현을 의도하였다는 것이 본고의 주장이다. 제임스는 작중화자인 가정교사의 윤리적 주체성과 현실에 대한 인식을 구성하고 통제하는 상상력의 비실재적 작용을 강조하는데, 이러한 비주체성은 그녀의 환영적 작인과 현실을 이해하는 핵심적인 실마리로서 ｢나사의 회전｣을 환영적 리얼리즘이라는 양가적인 범주로 이해할 수밖에 없는 이유의 근거이다. ｢나사의 회전｣에서 재현하는 환영의 실재성과 실재의 환영성의 상호 간섭과 구성의 양상을 예리하게 포착하여 묘사함으로써 제임스는 주체가 자신의 주체성과 현실을 스스로 구성하고 이해하는 과정에 있어서 실재와 비실재의 영역은 서로 밀접하게 연계되어 있으며 비실재의 작용이 없다면 실재는 인식되지도 존재하지도 않는다는 모순적인 진실을 드러낸다. 이 둘이 분리될 수 없음을 강조함으로써 제임스는 자기본위적인 주체성과 실증적인 현실성이라는 오래된 관념들을 비판한다는 것이 본고의 결론이다.
Critics have tended to focus on the ambiguous significance of Henry James’s representation of a series of scenes that feature apparitional entities in his most celebrated ghost story, “The Turn of the Screw,” in particular whose ambivalent ontic modality that consists of the real and the unreal. Yet their critical tendency mainly ends up reconfirming the fact that the two concepts are mutually exclusive and thus incompatible both ontologically and epistemologically. Contrary to this dichotomous view of being and reality, I argue in this essay, James intends to represent how the real and the unreal are collectively constitutive of our sense of agency and reality in “The Turn of the Screw.” In the ghost tale, James highlights that the unreal dynamic of imagination constitutes and controls the governess’s consciousness of moral autonomy and reality. Her such impersonality is a key to understanding her spectral agency and reality, what renders “The Turn of the Screw” a “sinister romance” registered in James’s spectral realism. After all, James’s spectral realism in “The Turn of the Screw” suggests a paradoxical truth that the real and the unreal are interconnected to each other in constituting a sense of autonomy and reality and the real cannot exist or be recognized without the working of the unreal. By stressing their inseparability, James challenges and complicates the existing conceptions of self-sustainable subjectivity and substantial reality.
