교과교실제에 대한 하나의 고찰

A Study on the Subject-based Classroom : Efforts and Limitations to Overcome Modern Space

이 연구는 교육을 위한 물리적 환경인 학교공간을 개선하기 위한 노력이 충분했는지에 대한 의문에서부터 시작하였다. 인간의 생존조건으로서 하드웨어적인 의식주를 이야기하는 것처럼, 교육에 있어서도 하드웨어적 조건 자체는 매우 중요하기 때문이다. 이 연구에서는 법규, 정책문서, 국가 교육과정 문서 등을 통시적으로 분석함으로써 교과교실제의 가능성과 한계를 짚어보고자 하였다. 특히 이 연구에서는 교과교실제를 근대적 학교공간의 한계를 넘어서려는 노력의 일환으로 보고, ‘근대적 학교공간을 극복하려는 노력과 그 한계’라는 관점 속에서 교과교실제를 파악하고자 하였다는 점에서 선행연구들과 차별화될 것이다. 연구 결과, 제6차 교육과정 때 교육과정 자율화 및 분권화가 중요해지면서 열린교육에 대한 논의가 늘어났고, 이는 학교건축이 다양해지는 데 기여하였다. 2009 개정 교육과정은 학교공간과 관련하여 획기적인 변화가 예상되는 교육과정이었다. 중등학교에서의 교과교실제를 활성화하기 위한 교육과정이었기 때문이다. 그러나 ①분과적 교과의 한계를 넘어서지 못한 점, ②학생이 아닌 교사 중심의 정책을 추진한 점, ③정치적 필요 속에서 태동한 정책이 중간에 추진동력을 잃은 점, ④소프트웨어적인 변화가 제대로 동반되지 못한 점 등이 한계점으로 드러났다. 향후에는 현대적 학교공간의 모습에 대한 충분한 철학적 논의, 시설이나 설비에 대한 적정기준을 법규나 국가 교육과정상에서 구체화, 지속적인 인력 및 행･재정적 지원을 통해 근대적 학교공간을 넘어선 현대적 학교공간을 안착시켜 나갈 필요가 있다.

This study started with a question of whether there was enough effort to improve school space as a physical environment for education. In this study, I tried to point out the possibilities and limitations of the Subject-based classroom by analyzing the laws, policy documents, and national curriculum documents. In particular, it will be differentiated from previous studies because of perspective of an effort to overcome modern school space and its limitations . As a result of the study, the 2009 revised curriculum was a curriculum that is expected to change dramatically in relation to school space. This was because it was a curriculum aimed at revitalizing the curriculum system in secondary schools. However, ① it did not go beyond the limits of the subject, ② it promoted a teacher-centered, reality-compromising policy rather than a student, ③ the policy born in the political need lost the driving force in the middle, ④ software changes was not properly accompanied. In the future, we need sufficient philosophical discussion about the appearance of new school spaces. And appropriate standards for facilities will be prepared in detail in laws or national curriculum. In addition new school spaces beyond modern school spaces will be settled through continuous administrative and financial support.
