21세기 ‘문장강화(文章講話)’의 친숙함과 새로움

A Study on the Familiarity and Newness of a Sentence Lecture of the 21st Century : After reading Go Jong-Seok s Sentences(Alma Books, 2014)

이 글은 최근 높아진 글쓰기(책) 현상을 진단하고, 그 가운데 ‘한국어 글쓰기’를 표방한 『고종석의 문장』을 대상으로 학술적 의미를 평가하였다. 『고종석의 문장』은 근대 이후 모색한 한국어 문장론 및 수사학의 전통을 잇고 있다. 이 책의 저자는 정치적 욕망과 심미적 욕망을 최소화하면서 ‘산문적 글쓰기’(저자는 이것을 ‘에세이 쓰기’로 통칭한 바 있다.)를 지향하였다. 또한 아름답고 효과적인 한국어 글쓰기, 동시에 그것과 양립 가능한 ‘스타일’을 강조하였다. 이를 위해 저자는 좋은 글은 무엇이고, 좋은 글의 요건은 무엇으로 성립되는지를 자신의 글쓰기를 포함한 한국 산문 전통 속에서 추출하고 있다. 『고종석의 문장』은 총론과 각론이 짜임새 있게 갖춰진 21세기 『문장강화(文章講話)』라 할 수 있다. 다만 글쓰기 사례와 실증이 직관 위주로 뒷받침되었다는 점, 글쓰기에 대한 과학적 이해와 전략적 사유가 부족하다는 점에서 한계를 지닌다. 그러나 이는 대중을 대상으로 한 교양서가 감당하기 어려운 주제다. 오히려 이 책이 제기한 문제제기와 전통은 대학에서, 특히 대학 글쓰기 현장에서 교육과 연구를 통해 해결해야할 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 글쓰기에 대한 과학적·개념적 수준의 접근과 글쓰기 전략에 대한 이해가 대학 글쓰기의 주요 논점으로 부각될 필요가 있다.

This study diagnosed the recently heightened phenomenon of writing books and evaluated the academic meanings of Go Jong-Seok s Sentences that claimed to advocate writing in Korean. Go Jong-Seok s Sentences inherited the tradition of syntax and rhetoric in Korean language that had been sought after since the beginning of modern times. Its author minimized his political and aesthetic desire and oriented himself toward prosaic writing (the investigator called it essay writing ). He put an emphasis on effective and beautiful writing in Korean and, at the same time, a style that was compatible with it, thus figuring out what made good writing and what were the requirements of good writing in the tradition of Korean prose including his own writing. Go Jong-Seok s Sentences can be called a sentence lecture of the 21st century with a good structure of the general and the particular. It also has its share of limitations including that the writing cases and proofs were supported with a focus on intuition and that there was a lack of scientific understanding and strategic thinking regarding writing. Those are, however, difficult topics for books of culture targeting the public to handle. The issues and heritage raised in the book should be dealt with in college, especially the field of college writing through education and research. It demands that a scientific and conceptual approach toward writing and an understanding of writing strategies should be highlighted as major points in college writing.
