Philosophical Writing and Speaking

이 글은 철학적 글쓰기의 전통적 의미와 현대적 변화 양상을 밝히고 철학적 글쓰기와 말하기의 관계를 탐구하고자 한다. 철학적 글쓰기는 전통적으로 논리와 추상적 사고능력을 증진시키는 이성적 작업으로 간주되어 왔다. 철학적 글쓰기 작업은 문자라는 매체를 수단으로 수행됨으로써 수렴적이며 선형적이라는 성질을 갖는다. 주어진 지식을 묵수하지 않고 늘 비판적 안목을 유지하는 것을 목표로 삼는다. 현대에 이르러 철학적 글쓰기의 역할은 변화하고 있다. 전공 교과로서의 철학이 아닌 교양 교과로서의 철학에서 특히 그 의미가 두드러진다. 교양 교과로서의 철학적 글쓰기는 여러 전공 학생들의 다양한 관심을 토대로 창의적이고 개성 있는 글쓰기를 포괄함으로써 그 외연을 넓혀야 한다는 요구에 직면했다. 또한 전공의 벽을 넘어 다양한 전공 영역과의 융합적 활동으로 변화되어야 한다는 압박도 받고 있다. 이 글은 이러한 변화에 능동적으로 대응하는 것이 인문학의 위기를 극복하는 적절한 방법이라고 주장한다. 이러한 변화과정에서 토론 중심의 말하기는 핵심적인 역할을 한다. 말하기는 논리력과 추상적 사고력을 증진시킨다는 점에서 철학적 글쓰기와 그 성격을 공유한다. 그러나 말하기에는 철학적 글쓰기와는 다른 특성들이 있다. 말하기는 멀티미디어와 결합됨으로써 인간의 다양한 감각 기관을 활용한 의사소통 수단으로 확대될 수 있다. 하나의 주제에만 머무르지 않음으로써 확산적 사고력을 증진시키는 데 도움을 주며 여러 사람이 함께 작업에 참여함으로써 협동심을 기르는 데에도 기여한다. 이러한 활동은 궁극적으로 공감 능력을 증진시킨다. 결과가 아닌 과정으로 평가받는다는 점에서 교육적 의의 또한 크다. 요컨대 토론 중심의 말하기는 이성적ㆍ비판적 활동으로서의 철학적 글쓰기에 감성적ㆍ공감적 성격을 삼투시키는 중요한 역할을 한다.

This paper intends to explain the traditional meaning of philosophical writing and its aspects of change. and to examine the relation of philosophical writing and speaking. Philosophical writing has been traditionally regarded as a work of improving the ability of logical and abstract thinking. Philosophical writing is convergent and linear as it is performed by means of alphabet. Its aim is to maintain the critical perspective without clinging to given knowledge. The role of philosophical writing is changing these days especially in the curriculum of liberal arts. Philosophical writing as a subject of liberal arts is confronted with a need that its sphere should be extended by including creative and characterful writings of diverse students. And it is under pressure to be altered as a work of fusion with other majors. This paper argues that we can overcome the crisis of humanities by coping actively with the changing circumstances. Speaking(especially debate) plays a key role in these changes. Speaking promotes the ability of logical and abstract thinking also. However it has its typical characteristic different from philosophical writing. It can be augmented as a new communication media by combination with multimedia. Speaking also helps to improve the ability of divergent thinking and to develop cooperative spirit. We don t cling to one subject but cooperate with others during speaking. Speaking ultimately improves the ability of sympathy. Students are graded by speaking process during class. In short, speaking plays a key role to saturates philosophical writing with emotional and sympathetic aspects.
