A basic research for Qualitative innovation in university writing education - A case of writing education in Williams College

이 연구는 윌리엄스대 교육과정의 전반적인 특성을 살피고(2), 윌리엄스대 글쓰기 교육의 운영에서 배울 수 있는 점을 논하고(3), 우리나라 대학 글쓰기 교육의 질적인 편차를 줄이는 방안을 제시함으로써 제자리걸음에 머물고 있는 일부 대학들의 글쓰기 교육이 몇 걸음 더 나아가게 하는(4) 데 있다. 윌리엄스대의 글쓰기 교육은 글쓰기 집중과정에서 개설되는 100개 이상의 교과목들에서 이루어지고 있다. 글쓰기 집중과정은 필수 과정이라, 윌리엄스대의 모든 학생들은 2개의 교과목을 반드시 이수해야 한다. 분반정원 최대 19명이고, 수강 과정에서 학생들은 교수, 튜터, 글쓰기 파트너, TA 등의 조언과 피드백을 받으면서 질 높은 글쓰기 교육을 받고 있다. 한국 일부 대학들의 글쓰기 교육은 여전히 과다한 수강인원을 헌신적인 노력으로 감당하는 글쓰기 교수자들에게 기대고 있으면서도, 겨우 한 학기 과정으로 구성된 글쓰기 교육에 대해서 신화적인 효과를 상상하며, 글쓰기 교육에 대해 의심하고 있다. 각 대학들은 교육이 국가의 미래라는 점을 상기하면서 교육의 질을 높이는 노력을 해야 한다.

This article is to study overall traits of the curriculum of Williams College(Ⅱ), to discuss what we can learn from the writing education of Williams College(Ⅲ), and to show the way to reduce the qualitative gap for some colleges’ standstill writing programs(Ⅳ). The writing education of Williams College is consisted of over 260 opened classes in writing intensive course. The writing intensive course is a required course so every Williams College students have to complete 2 courses. A class has maximum 19 students, and the students are having a quality writing education by advice and feedback from professors, tutors, writing partners and TA. Some Colleges’ writing education in Korea still leans on the writing professor’s devotion to manage the excessive numbers of students, but imagining mythic effect on barely one semester course writing program and doubting about it. Williams College’s education is an example that surely shows bold investment raise the quality of education. Colleges that are in good financial condition by all sorts of the national project’s support need a bold investigation for the writing educational renovation. Remind that education is the future of nation we should try to raise the quality of education.
