Research on How to Combine Writing and Career Guidance

대학 신입생은 진정한 사회인, 책임감 있는 성인으로 넘어가는 시기에 해당하는 학생이다. 신입생 시절은 자신이 삶의 주체로 우뚝 설 준비를 해야 하는 때이다. 이런 점을 염두에 둔다면, 신입생을 대상으로 한 ‘진로지도(Career Guidance)’나 ‘글쓰기(Writing)’는 신입생과 교수가 처음으로 대면하면서 대학 신입생들로 하여금 자신의 미래를 위해 세계와 인간에 대해 좀 더 ‘진지하게’ 접근해야 함을 거론할 수 있는 중요한 과목들이다. 진로 지도는 ‘너는 이 직업을 선택하라’고 정해 주는 과정이 아니다. 오히려 진로 지도는 학생 본인으로 하여금 자신이 가장 잘 할 수 있는 것은 무엇인지를 고민하게 하고, 그런 고민이 학생의 인생에 얼마나 중요한 것인지를 공감하게 하는 과정이다. 이를 위해 학생이 잘 할 수 있고, 좋아하는 일이 무엇인지 찾는 과정을 도와주어 앞으로 어떻게 살아 갈 것인가를 함께 거론하게 된다. 이 글에서는 ‘진로지도’와 ‘글쓰기’에 대해 일종의 ‘결합 수업(Combination Teaching)’ 방식을 채택한 사례를 분석하고 그 의의와 한계점을 논의하고자 한다. 교과목의 특성상 진로지도는 전공별 학과에서 수행하는 것이 효과적이고, 글쓰기는 교양학부에서 담당해야 하는 것이니 자연스레 결합 수업의 필요가 생긴 것이라 하겠다. 구체적으로 말하자면, 학기의 절반은 교양에서 신입생들을 대상으로 진로지도 일반의 내용과 글쓰기에 대해 강의를 하고 이후 학과로 돌아간 신입생들은 소규모로 학과 교수로부터 진로지도에 대해 좀 더 심도 깊은 면담을 통해 진로에 대한 피드백을 받는 과정을 거치는 방식이다. 강의와 면담이라는 두 가지 교육 방식이 결합된 것이다.

College freshmen go through days in which to prepare themselves to be a sincere and responsible social being. Freshmen days should be a period when students establish their independence. To keep in mind this fact, ‘Career Guidance’ and ‘Writing’ for freshmen are surely significant subjects which allow college faculty and students to sit face to face each other for the first time in college and to discuss together how to understand and approach the relation between the world surrounding them and human beings for the betterment of the freshmen themselves. Career Guidance is not a course that dictates ‘what career one should choose.’ Rather, it should be a course that makes them ponder what they can do best in the future and realize the importance of this process. This course is designed to naturally help students find what and how to do best and how to find the most proper way to their future careers. This essay aims to analyze the case which adopts the ‘Combination Teaching’ for ‘Career Guidance’ and ‘Writing’ for freshmen and to discuss its meanings and limitations. Due to its own specialty, ‘Career Guidance’ can be efficiently performed within the scope of each department, while ‘Writing’had better be executed by the department of liberal education. That’s why ‘Combination Teaching’ comes into being. To be specific, during the former half of a semester there should be a lecture on the general contents of career guidance and writing for freshmen, and during the latter half freshmen should be divided into several small groups and consulted further on career guidance by the faculty of their original department with much further discussion entailing feedback on future careers. In sum, this course features blended lecture and consultation.
