이 글은 대학 글쓰기 교육에서 ‘실용성’의 개념과 범주 및 ‘실용적 글쓰기’ 교과의 교육목표 설정을 위한 고민에서 출발하였다. [실용적 글쓰기] 교과는 기존의 대학글쓰기에서 다루지 않았던 새로운 장르의 글쓰기를 주로 다룬다. 무엇보다 강좌의 목표가 ‘독자의 기대와 목적을 고려한 전략적 글쓰기 방법의 습득’이라는 점에서 기존의 기초교양 글쓰기와 성격이 확연히 다르다. [실용적 글쓰기]가 단일 교과로 개설된 사례 외에도 많은 대학들이 취업용 자기소개서 작성법, 이력서 작성법, 로드맵, 포트폴리오 작성 등 실용문서 작성법을 기존 글쓰기 커리큘럼에 새롭게 추가하여 운영하고 있다. 주지하듯 이러한 ‘실용적 글쓰기’는 이른바 비즈니스 문서작성법과 관련이 깊다. 즉, 실용적 글쓰기는 비즈니스 문서작성법을 익혀 실생활에 바로 활용할 수 있는 글쓰기 능력을 기르는 것인데, 이는 기업이 예비노동자에게 요구하는 직무능력 중 하나인 비즈니스 문서작성법을 대학 글쓰기 교과영역에 본격적으로 도입하는 것을 의미한다. 기업에서 요구하는 기초직무역량 교육이 대학제도 내부로 들어오는 이러한 현상은 당연한 변화인가. 이러한 변화가 ‘비판적 지성인의 양성’이라는 대학 교양교육의 본령과 상충하는 것은 아닌가. 대학 기초교양 글쓰기로서 실용적 글쓰기는 어떤 정체성을 갖고 어떤 교육적 가치를 추구해야하는가. 이 글은 이러한 물음을 통해서 대학의 교양교육으로서 ‘실용적 글쓰기’의 교육적 가치를 구상해보고자 한다. 일반적으로 실용적 글쓰기 장르로 분류되는 자기소개서, 이력서, 제안서 등은 특수한 목적에 따라 제한적 독자를 상대로 작성되는 글이다. 따라서 글쓰기의 성공여부는 이러한 특수한 상황과 맥락을 충분히 고려하였는가에 달려 있다. 독자의 상황과 글쓰기의 목적을 파악하여 전략적인 정보의 재조직, 아이디어의 채택과 실현을 위한 구체적 실행계획 작성 등이 실용적 글쓰기 전략의 핵심이라 하겠다. 그러나 이런 종류의 글쓰기 훈련이 대학교육 안에서 온전히 추구되어야 하는지 고민해 봐야한다. 현장 실무 의사소통 능력 외에 실용적 글쓰기 수업에서 추구해야 할 가치가 있다면 무엇인가. 실용적 글쓰기 교과운영 사례를 통해 내린 잠정적 결론은 대학 교육의 연구방법론 및 이론을 현장/시장에 적용하여 ‘학문과 이론의 현장성을 경험’하게 하는 것이다. 이것이 대학 실용글쓰기 교육의 목표와 교육방법 모색에 유용한 참조가 될 것이라 판단된다. 이는 단순히 시장질서에 순응하는 훈련된 직업인의 양산이 아니라, 학생들 스스로 학습의욕을 고취하고 사회적 소통과 학문적 소통의 결합을 통해서 대학교육의 실용적 가치를 발견함으로써 글쓰기에 대한 내적 동기부여도 가능하리라고 본다.
