우리 고전을 읽고 쓴다는 것

An Essay on the Reading and Writing the Korean Classics

본고는 고전 읽기와 쓰기에 대한 최근의 연구 동향과 관련하여 과연 오늘날 우리 고전을 읽고 쓴다는 것이 어떤 의미를 지니는지, 우리 고전을 통한 작문교육은 무엇을 목적으로 하고, 어떤 측면에 주의해야 하는지에 대한 관견을 제시해보고자 한 것이다. 먼저 ‘우리 고전’의 범주 문제로, 오랜 기간 한문문명권속에 참여해 왔던 역사적?문화적 맥락을 고려함이 필요하다고 하였다. 우리고전을 활용한 작문 교육의 목적과 관련해서는 우리 고전을 활용한 작문 교육이 외국의 고전이나 오늘날 우리 사회의 글을 통해서 이루어질 수 있는 작문교육과는 구별되는 것이어야 한다는 전제 아래, 우리 고전이 가지고 있는 본질적 가치, 우리 고전에 담긴 인간과 세계에 대한 통찰, 그 문학성과 예술성에 대하여 이야기하고 쓸 수 있도록 해야 할 것이라고 하였다. 고전에 대한 다양한 해석 가능성에 주목하기보다는 오히려 고전을 정확하게 읽어내는 데 역점을 두어야 한다고도 하였다. 우리 고전을 활용한 작문 교육 방법과 관련해서는 첫째, 우리 고전을 읽고 쓸 때에는 고전의 일부만을 읽고 쓰게 하기보다는 전체를 읽고 쓰도록 하는 것이 바람직하고, 둘째 학생들이 고전에 대한 정확한 이해에 도달할 수 있도록 하기 위하여 배경 정보나 지식을 충분히 전달하는 것이 바람직하며, 셋째 과거 우리 선인들이 글쓰기에 대하여 가지고 있었던 태도나 관습을 충분히 고려함이 필요하다고 하였다. 아울러 학생들이 실제로 글을 쓰는 시간보다는 고전을 이해하는 데 필요한 시간을 더 많이 가져야 함도 역설하였다. 우리 고전을 읽고 쓰는 작업은 우리 자신의 정체성과 문화적 전통을 발견하고 확인하는 과정이 되어야 할 것이다.

In this paper, I suggested my opinion over the problems related with the writing education in college, especially the matter of reading and writing the Korean classics. What does it mean for us today to read and write Korean classics? What is the purpose to use Korean classics in writing education? How dose it possible to achieve that purpose? The writing education using Korean classics must be different from the one using the other material such as foreign classics or modern readings. The writing education using Korean classics purses to grasp the value of Korean classics and the insight into human nature. Also it covers the scrupulous analysis of the literary value and artistic value of Korean classics. It should be focused to understand the Korean classics exactly. I suggested instructional methods for writing education using Korean classics in this paper. At first, it is better to make the students to read full text than to read a part of Korean classics. Secondly, it is needed to give them the background information or knowledge enough for each Korean classic. Finally it is needed to consider the customs of writing that had kept by our ancestors. The work to read and write Korean classics is the process of finding and confirm the identity and cultural tradition of ourself.
