대학 교양교육의 새로운 모색

New Way of University Liberal Art Education - Humanitas College’s Writing Education in Kyung Hee University

경희대학교는 대학교육의 본질 목적을 되찾고 학부교양교육의 면모를 일신하기 위해 새로운 교양교육을 실시했다. 경희대는 시대적 압박에 밀려 심각한 왜곡과 변질을 강요받고 있는 대학교육의 기본 목적을 재확인하고 교양교육의 수준과 품위를 회복하여 21세기 지구 공동사회를 이끌어 갈 탁월한 개인, 책임 있는 시민, 성숙한 공동체 성원을 길러내려고 한다. 후마니타스 칼리지는 이런 목적을 실현하기 위해 설립하는 학부교양교육전담기구이다. 오늘날 세계는 과거 어느 때보다도 높은 수준의 다양성, 복잡성, 상호의존성의 관계로 얽혀있다. 세계의 어떤 문제도 한 가지 접근법으로는 이해되지 않는다. 교양교육은 미래 지구 공동체 사회를 살아갈 젊은이들이 세계에 유연하게 대응하고 필요한 변화를 선도하며 두려움 없이 문제를 해결해 나갈 능력의 토대를 닦아줄 것이다. 이를 위해 후마니타스 교양교육은 인간, 사회, 문명, 우주를 폭넓게 이해하며 생각하는 능력을 키워주고자 한다. 정보와 지식, 가치와 태도, 의견과 사실을 이성적으로 성찰해 옳고 그름을 판단하는 과학적 비판적 사유능력과 타자를 이해하고 배려하는 공동체 가치를 체득하고 이를 통해 사회봉사정신을 함양하고자 한다. 또한 국적, 인종, 문화의 경계를 넘어 지구사회 공동의 문제를 인지하고 함께 풀어가는 세계시민의 역량을 키워주고 심리적 교감과 창조적 표현능력, 소통을 촉진하는 능력을 도모한다. 이러한 철학을 바탕으로 경희대 글쓰기 프로그램은 표현적(expressive)이고 성찰적 글쓰기 중심으로 구성되었다. 대학 신입생에게 글쓰기는 대부분 ‘생애 최초의 글쓰기’이다. 이들에게 자신을 성찰하고, 타인과 공감하는 성인으로 성장시키기 위해 글쓰기 프로그램을 ‘글쓰기1: 나를 위한 글쓰기’(1학년), ‘글쓰기2: 세계를 위한 글쓰기’(2학년) 2개로 배치하였다. ‘나를 위한 글쓰기’는 자아와 타자에 대한 성찰적 태도와 관계 재정립을 위한 기초 글쓰기이다. ‘세계를 위한 글쓰기’는 새로운 교육과 실천을 거치면서 받은 지적 충격을 폭넓게 수렴하여 특정 주제를 비판적이고 논리적이고 창의적인 안목으로 표현하는 심화 글쓰기이다. 온-오프라인 교육을 연결하여 학생들끼리의 피드백과 교수-학생 간 피드백이 입체적으로 이루어지도록 했다. 강좌당 학생수를 20명으로 하여 소통하는 교육이 되도록 하였다. 평가는 경쟁보다는 협동과 협력을 권장하기 위해 절대평가로 운영되고 있다.

Kyung Hee University seeks to examine the basic purpose of university education which is suppressed to be degraded under the weight of societal pressure. Also Kyung Hee University is looking forward to nurture fine, upstanding individuals, responsible citizens and mature community members who will lead the international society in the 21st century by restoring its quality and class. Humanitas College is moving to take exclusive charge of undergraduate liberal arts education to achieve this goal. The world today is more interconnected than at any time in the past. It is extremely diverse, complex, and interdependent, and becoming increasingly so with each passing day. No global issue can be understood solely by any one approach. Liberal arts education will provide the basic skills young people need in the international community to flexibly respond to the world, lead necessary changes, and fearlessly resolve issues. Humanitas liberal arts education is designed to build capacity to understand and consider humanity, society, civilizations, and the universe in a holistic way. This entails scientific and critical thinking to rationally reflect on information and knowledge, values and attitudes, and opinions and facts, and to tell right from wrong. It also means building community spirit to understand and be considerate of others and to raise a strong sense of service to society. The program seeks, furthermore, to develop students’ capacity as global citizens to recognize common international issues and resolve them in cooperation with the rest of the world. In doing so, it calls upon them to transcend nationality, race, and culture, and to develop communication skills for psychological communication and creative expression. Based on such philosophy, Kyung Hee’s writing program is organized mainly with introspective and expressive writing. For university entrants, in many cases, writing is a ‘the first writing of their lives’. In order to enable students to self-examine and to grow as adults who can share sympathy with others, writing program is divided into two classes: one is ‘Writing 1: Writing for oneself’(freshmen), the other is ‘Writing 2: Writing for the world’(sophomore). ‘Writing for oneself’ is a basic writing for reestablishment of relationship and introspective attitude to themselves and others. ‘Writing for the world’ is advanced writing to express critical, logical and creative thought on a certain topic by accepting intellectual shock obtained from new education and action. Connection of on-line and off-line education enabled students themselves and teachers communicate dimensionally. Class capacity is limited to 20 students for further communicative education. Criterion-referenced evaluation is applied to promote cooperation and teamwork not competition.
