Study on the Sandbar Collapse in an Estuary

  • 11

The development of sandbars in an estuary, where a river and sea meet, complicates disaster prevention as it reduces the discharge capacity of the river. In rivers where sandbars are frequently generated, the possibility of river flooding increases due to the decrease in discharge capacity downstream. In addition, when a sandbar develops for a long period of time, a sediment budget imbalance occurs due to a decrease in the amount of soil supplied from the river, which may result in coastal erosion. In order to investigate the root cause of the sediment problem in coastal areas, it is important to correctly understand the sediment supply mechanism of the river, the source of supply. Currently, in South Korea, there is insufficient research on the successive changes in the formation, development, and collapse of sandbars. Therefore, as part of the analysis of the sediment problem in the coastal area, this study reproduces the sandbar collapse due to flushing in the estuary of Maeupcheon located on Maengbang beach and determines the flow rate at which the sandbar is flushed, to solve the problem caused by the sandbar development in the estuary. This study aims to provide appropriate guidelines for river management in terms of disaster prevention and in consideration of the environmental aspects of coastal erosion, based on the flow rate at which sandbar collapse may occur.
