엘리자베스 세인트 쟈끄 (Elizabeth Saint Jacques)와 데이비드 맥켄 (David McCann)의 영어 시조 연구

A Study of Sijo Prosody and English Sijo in North America: Focusing on Elizabeth Saint Jacques and David McCann

한국 고유의 운문 양식인 시조는 해외에도 꾸준히 소개되어왔다. 1990년대 이후에는 미국과 캐나다 등에서 영어로 시조를 쓰는 시인들이 출현하여 활동하기 시작하였고 영어 시조 창작집도 간행되었다. 최근에는 영어 시조와 관련된 포럼이나 세미나 등이 미국의 대학과 문학 동호회 중심으로 활발하게 전개되고 있다. 본고에서는 북미의 영어 시조 시인 중 대표적인 인물인 엘리자베스 세인트 쟈끄와 데이비드 맥켄의 영어 시조를 고찰하여 영어 시조의 특징을 살피고 발전 가능성을 전망한다. 특히 세인트 쟈끄는 창작 시조집에서 고유의 작시법을 밝히고 있어 그의 작시법을 분석하고 창작의 실제와 비교 검토한다. 세인트 쟈끄의 영어 시조는 언어적 감수성의 면에 있어서나 시적 은유의 구현에 있어서 긍정적인 평가를 받을 수 있다. 「우주에 보내는 말」에 나타난 시어의 선택과 이미지의 선명성은 그 점을 확인하게 한다. 맥켄은 시조 연구자이며 번역자이고 동시에 시인이기도 하다. 맥켄의 「길을 잃고」에 구현된 시상의 간결성과 언어의 음악성을 통해 영어 시조의 장점을 확인할 수 있다. 본고에서는 세인트 쟈끄와 맥켄의 시조 텍스트에 대한 국내의 기존 연구에 나타난 텍스트 해석의 한계와 결락점을 지적하고 대안적 해석을 제시한다. 그리하여 두 시인에 대하여 보다 긍정적인 평가가 가능하다는 점을 보인다. 그리하여 궁극적으로는 맥켄과 세인트 쟈끄가 보여주는 시조 텍스트들이 영어 시조의 가능성을 긍정적으로 전망하게 한다는 점을 밝힌다.

Sijo is a uniquely Korean poetic genre, which is often understood and explained vis-a-vis Japanese Haiku. As much as Haiku became popular in North America, Sijo has started to gain recognition since 1990s. This paper attempts to examine and evaluate the aesthetic values of Sijo written in English, focusing on two North American poets: Elizabeth Saint Jacques and David McCann. First, this paper analyzes the prosody of Saint Jacques because it explains how the poet understood the nature of Sijo. This paper also analyzes the two poets’ Sijo texts. More specifically, this paper pays attention to the poetic closure of their texts. As is known, the closure in the final line of Sijo is often the most critical element in the text. By employing such elements as wit, twist, and strong emotional expression, the closure reaches textual fruition and determines its degree of success. Saint Jacques and McCann provide exemplary Sijo texts in English, this paper concludes, with the elegance of poetic closure.
