차펙의 드라마 『로숨의 만능 로봇』에 나타난 주제, 모티프 그리고 상징의 연구

A Study of the Structure, Themes, Motives and Symbols in Čapek‘s Play R.U.R.

카렐 차펙의 『로숨의 만능 로봇』은 사람이 스스로 창조한 기계문명의 노예가 되며 마침내 멸망하는 것을 묘사한 반 유토피아 풍자극이다. 어떤 외딴 섬에서 로숨이 발명한 ‘만능 로봇’이 제작되어 전 세계적으로 판매된다. 이 로봇제조 회사는 대 번창하여 상업주의 물질문명의 유토피아가 실현되는 듯하다. 그러나 곧 로봇들이 전 세계적으로 반란을 일으켜 로봇같이 손으로 노동을 했던 알퀴스트를 제외한 모든 인간들을 죽이고 로봇 세상을 만든다. 인류는 전멸하고 로봇도 더 이상 만들지 못하게 되어 로봇 세상도 위기에 빠진다. 이 절망의 순간에 유일하게 살아남은 건축기사 알퀴스트는 우연히 사랑의 감정을 가진 젊은 로봇 한 쌍을 발견함으로써 희곡은 하나의 희망을 암시하며 막이 내린다. 이 희곡은 희극적인 서막과 3막으로 구성된 집단극이라는 소제목을 달고 있다. 그러나 엄밀한 의미에서 집단극은 아니다. 인간의 창조 정신은 이 희곡의 주요 테마 중 하나다. 이 희곡에는 또한 인간의 유토피아 건설에 대한 강한 페시미즘의 주제가 있다. 여기에는 또 현대 사회의 여성 불임의 테마, 지능로봇의 테마, 생명불멸의 테마 등을 다루고 있다. 각 이름의 상징 등 여러 상징들도 잘 다루어 져 있다. 여기에 나오는 모든 주인공들은 자기 나름대로의 신념에 따라 행동을 하는데, 차펙은 이들 모두를 그 나름대로 옳다고 하는 것으로 봐서 작가의 상대주의 철학이 반영되어 있다. 이런 면에서 이는 차펙의 말대로 ‘진실의 희극’이다. 또한 인간이 자기가 만든 인조인간 로봇에 의해서 몰살당하는 즉 인간의 두뇌에서 나온 개념을 인간이 더 이상 제어할 수 없게 된다는 면에서 볼 때 이는 차펙의 말대로 ‘과학의 희극’이다.

Karel Čapek s R.U.R. is a satire on anti-utopia on the mankind that was destroyed by machines, robots which were invented by man. In a factory on a remote island these universal robots invented by Rossum were sold very well all around the world. Utopia of commercial materialism would be realized thanks to the mass production of robots by this company. But very soon robots revolted against their inventors, men, and killed almost all human beings, and created robot world. Almost all human beings were killed and no more robots could be made because their manual was destroyed too. There is a critical moment not only in human world but also in new robot world. In this moment the only survived human being Alquist founded a young robot couple which had a feeling of love to each other, so the drama ends with a hope of multiplying new human beings. The title collective drama , R.U.R. in three acts and an epilogue do not correspond with the contents of the play exactly. The creative mind of mankind is one of main themes. There is also a motive of pessimism in building an utopian society. Themes of female sterility in modern society, of intelligent robot, immortality of life, symbols of main characters and other motifs are well indicated in the drama. We also find out author s relativism in this play, where everybody is right in his own point of view about the truth. In this Čapek characterizes his comedy about the truth and he introduces his another idea which is the comedy about the science. Because man can not control his concept which was originated by a human brain in the scene where all the men were killed by their creation robots.
