제국주의 문화 유산의 지속성

The Influence of Imperialism’s Cultural Legacy : Case Study of The British Empire and Zimbabwe

본고의 주제는 문화와 제국주의다. 본고는 영제국의 문화적 유산은 정치적 절연에도 불구하고 피식민국가에 그 영향을 지속적으로 끼치고 있다는 주장아래, 이를 영국-짐바브웨 사례를 통해 살펴보았다. 영제국은 통치에 있어 의도적 또는 비의도적으로 문화 요소를 활용하였으며, 교육제도, 스포츠, 언론 등은 그 매개가 되었다. 기독교 교리와 사제단은 이러한 매개 활용에 용이한 환경을 조성하였다. 한편, 19세기 후반부터 영제국의 영향권 아래 있던 오늘날 짐바브웨 지역에서도 교육제도, 언론, 문화·스포츠 활동 및 지식층 네트워크 등에 있어 여전히 영제국의 문화적 유산이 영향을 끼치고 있다는 것이 확인된다. 사례 연구를 통해 영제국 문화 요소의 지속성을 확인한 본 연구는, 지역 연구 차원에서 아프리카 구식민지역에 대한 복합적 접근 필요성과 외교정책적 측면에서 공공외교 효과성 증진과 관련한 함의를 제공한다.

The main topic of this article is culture and imperialism. This article studies its main viewpoint that the influence of the former British Empire’s cultural legacy has continued in the Republic of Zimbabwe, its former colony, in spite of Harare’s recent lukewarm relations with London. When managing its colonies, the British Empire intentionally as well as unintentionally utilized cultural media such as education, sports and the press. Christianity and its priest laid the foundation of the utilization of these cultural media in colonial areas. This article found out that the British cultural legacy still has effects on the people and society of Zimbabwe in a variety of the fields such as this Southern African country’s education and press system, sports and leisure style and the network of the local elites. This study poses implications for the necessity of a comprehensive approach when studying the former colonies in Africa such as Zimbabwe in terms of regional study and for the improvement of public diplomacy in terms of planning of foreign policy.
