French History hiding behind the World History?: Salvery and Colonies in French Middle School History Textbook

2015년에 개정된 프랑스 교육과정은 기존의 자국사 중심주의적 역사서술을 벗어나 세계사로서의 성격을 좀 더 강하게 드러낸다. 이에 유럽이라는 지리적 범위를 벗어나 아메리카와 아프리카에서 이루어진 식민주의와 제국주의도 주요한 주제로 다루고 있다. 하지만 이 중에서도 노예제와 노예무역과 관련 주제는 알제리 전쟁에 비해 크게 쟁점화되지 못하고 있다. 이에 본고는 프랑스 노예제 및 식민지의 역사를 일별한 후 2015년 교육과정에 따라 최근 발간된 중학교 역사 교과서 주제 중 노예제와 식민지가 어떻게 서술되어 있는가를 분석한다. 프랑스 중학교 교과서는 근대 자본주의적 노예제의 역사를 세계사의 차원에서 서술하고는 있지만, 프랑스와 연루된 주요한 식민지 관련 사실들을 은폐하고 희석하려는 경향을 보여준다. 또한 노예제와 문명화 사명에 대한 명시적 비판에도 불구하고 비유럽 세계를 주체가 없는 비역사의 지대로 둠으로써 텍스트 구성방식에 있어 인종차별적 태도를 보여주고 있다. 이는 노예제와 식민지를 세계사 차원에서 다루면서도 이에 대한 프랑스의 책임을 무화시키는 효과를 가져온다. 또한 텍스트 구성상의 인종차별과 과거사에 대한 회피는 제국주의와 인종주의에 변명의 소지를 내어 주어 프랑스가 내세우는 민주주의와 인권의 가치에 반하는 자가당착에 빠진다.

The French curriculum revised in 2015 reveals the character of world history more strongly than the existing Francocentic history. Therefore, colonialism and imperialism in America and Africa are also covered as major topics beyond the geographical range of Europe. However, among them, the topics related to slavery and the slave trade are not much more focused than the Algerian war. This study, after discerning the history of French slavery and colonies, analyzes how slavery and colonies are described among the themes of middle school history textbooks published according to the 2015 curriculum. The French middle school textbooks describe the history of modern capitalist slavery at the level of world history, but show the tendency to conceal and dilute major colonial facts related to France. In addition, despite the explicit criticism of slavery and the mission of civilization, the non-European world is shown as non-history zone without subject, showing a racist attitude in the way the text is structured. This has the effect of treating slavery and colonies at the world history level, but also dissolving France s responsibility for it. In addition, racism in text composition and avoidance of past history, which are against the values of democracy and human rights, have excuses for imperialism and racism, and fall into self-contradiction.
