唐代 譯經事業과 監護

Translation of Buddhist Scriptures and Guardianship in the Tang Dynasty

본 논문에서는 唐代에 譯經事業이 전성기를 이룰 수 있었던 배경으로 국가의 후원과 감독의 역할에 주목해보았다. 貞觀年間을 시작으로 당 정부는 역경사업에 적극적으로 후원하였고 유교 관료로 구성된 監護大使를 파견하였다. 당 태종 시기 승관제도가 鴻臚寺와 祠部로 예속되면서 역경사업 역시 자연스럽게 국가권력 아래 감독을 받게 되었다. 정관연간 사서와 유교 경전의 대규모 편찬사업이 진행된 바 있는데, 당시 편찬사업에서 감수국사를 담당했던 관원들이 대체로 역경사업에도 파견되었다. 당 전기 황제는 국가권력의 정당성을 강화하고, 중후기 황제는 내우외환의 시기에 호국이라는 정치적 목적을 현창하기 위해서 역경사업을 활용하였다. 감호는 前秦 시기부터 형성되었지만 당대에 이르러 국가권력의 적극적인 후원 아래 그 역할이 확립되었다. 監護大使의 명칭은 매 역장마다 차이가 있었지만, 공통적으로 역장을 관리하고 경전을 검열한 후 황제에게 진상하는 업무를 담당하고 있었다. 감호대사의 직무는 당 중후기에 이르러 전문화되었다. 그들은 주로 황제의 측근 인물, 문관학사 출신, 불교와 친연한 관료들로 구성되었다. 황제는 측근을 감호대사로 파견함으로써 자신의 정치적 목적을 달성하고자 했다. 또한 학술 능력이 뛰어난 감호대사를 통해 불경 번역의 완성도를 높이면서 정치적으로 유불도 화합을 추구하였다. 당대 국가권력의 개입, 후원과 감독으로 인해 역경사업은 정점에 달하였고, 대량의 불경이 번역되고 전파되면서 중국불교가 토착화되는 요인 가운데 하나로 작용했던 것이다.

This paper discusses why Buddhist Scriptures Translation reaches its peak in the Tang Dynasty and argues that it is the active patronage and supervision of the imperial family that made the Buddhist scriptural translation project(譯經事業) at its peak. It also explores the background, methods, and characteristics of the continuous support for the project from the royal family. The Tang Dynasty Buddhist scripture translation project was mainly influenced by the political implications to establish the legitimacy of the imperial power and to pray for national peace. Institutionally, a system of monk officials, was incorporated into the Hong Lu Si(鴻臚寺) and Ci Bu(祠部) to supervise Buddhist affairs under national orders. The Buddhist scriptural translation as a continuation of the series of compilation work by history book and Wujing Zhengyi(五經正義) during the King Tang Tai-zong implies the nature of the national project. Moreover, from Tai-zong to De-zong the emperor himself participated in the Buddhist scripture project to write the preface of the scriptures. The emperor also dispatched Guardian ambassador(監護大使) who were the closest aides to the emperor to the Buddhist scripture translation centers to manage and supervise the operation of the project. As the Tang imperial family regarded the Buddhist Scriptural translation projects as the national project, the translations of Buddhist scriptures from the Tang Dynasty are relatively accurate and in large amounts. With active sponsorship and management, the Tang family sought to legitimate imperial power and the political orientation of the emperor.
