보조사 ‘까지’의 인식양태 의미와 양태적 특성

The Epistemic Modality Meaning and Modalitic Characteristics of the Particle ‘kkaji’

이 글은 보조사 ‘까지’가 가지고 있는 척도상 최솟값의 의미로부터 보조사 ‘까지’가 ‘명제가 발생할 확률이 가장 낮다’는 인식양태 의미를 가지고 있음을 밝혀내는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 그러나 보조사 ‘까지’가 ‘명제가 발생할 확률이 가장 낮다’는 의미를 가진다는 것만으로는 이를 인식양태의 표지로 다룰 수 없다. 인식양태를 문법범주로 보는 이상 전형적인 인식양태 표지와 ‘까지’가 통사적 특징을 공유한다는 것이 증명되어야 하는 것이다. 따라서 본 연구는 보조사 ‘까지’가 화자의 현재의 태도만을 표현할 수 있다는 점, 부정의 영역에 들어오지 않는다는 점, 문장의 명제 내용에는 아무런 영향을 주지 않는다는 점 등의 전형적인 인식양태로서의 통사적 특징을 보인다는 사실을 증명하였다. 반면 보조사 ‘까지’는 문장유형에 따라 양태의 담지자 전환이 발생하지 않는다는 점, 청유문과 명령문에도 사용될 수 있다는 점에서 전형적인 인식양태로서의 통사적 특징을 보이지 못했다. 이를 통해 본고에서는 보조사 ‘까지’의 양태적 특성을 정도성의 차원에서 파악할 여지가 있음을 주장하였다.

The purpose of this article is to reveal that the particle “kkaji” has the meaning of the epistemic modality from the fact that particle “kkaji” has the meaning of the minimum value on the scale. However the fact that particle “kkaji’ means ‘the proposition is least likely to occur is not enough for ”kkaji“ to be treated as a marker of the epistemic modality. Since the epistemic modality is regarded as a grammatical category, it must be proved that the typical epistemic modality marker and kkaji share some syntactic feature. Therefore, this study shows kkaji’s syntactic features as a typical epistemic modality, such as that the particle ”Kkaji“ can only express the speaker s current attitude, can not be denied, and does not affect the content of the proposition. On the other hand, the particle ”kkaji“ did not show syntactic characteristics as a typical marker of epistemic modality in that it does not change the orientedness of modality depending on the sentence type, and it can be used in imperative and propositional Sentence. Through this, this paper argues that there is possibilities for understanding the modalitic characteristics of the particle ”kkaji“ in Gradience.
