A Study on the Socio-Cultural Effect of Hosting a Sports Event: Focused on the Visitors’ Perception of Taekwondo Tournament

The study aims to analyze the effect of hosting a sports event as sports tourism to vitalize local tourism and eventually to regenerate sub-region. Focused on the visitors’ perception of socio-cultural effects of a hosting Taekwondo tournament, 120 questionnaires by a convenient self administration method was analyzed using SPSS 18.0. Results showed that the direct effect of hosting Taekwondo Tournament on Yongwol provincial economy was total spend of KR￦ 348, 638, 568 by the 1,800 visitors. Social-cultural effects are vary; visitors’ agreement level was 74.1% on the promotion of local sports, and the promotion of local culture, each. Others are enhance of local image(71.7%), implantation of local pride (61.7%), the improvement of local environment(60.9%), and reconciliation of locality(59.1%). Factors of comparative advantage of the venue are landscape and food which shows the necessity of the future stronger link between sports and local tourism. To maximize the effect of hosting sports events, a strategic approach toward on sports tourism is requested to attract more visitors and revisit, and eventually promote quality of life of the locality, which is the solution to the problem of local extinction and long-term prosperity of the locality.
