한국사회에서 영웅의 왜곡과 (재)소환

The Distortion and (Re)summon of Heroes in Korea

영웅은 고대부터 현대에 이르기까지 전 세계의 거의 모든 사회에서 발견되고 숭상되어왔다. 그것은 영웅과 영웅적 행동이 고귀한 가치가 스며든 긍정적 개념으로 인식되어 사회와 개인의 삶에 널리 공유되는 ‘의미와 자극의 원천’으로 작용한 결과일 것이다. 그러나 영웅 또는 영웅적 행동은 단일한 특징보다는 다양한 많은 요소를 포함함으로써, 즉 사회마다, 개인마다 그것에 대한 인식이 다양해 손쉽게 정의하거나 검증하기 어려운 복잡한 양상을 띤다. 그런 의미에서 불행하게도 영웅은 특정 목적으로 무장한 정치권력, 대중문화, 이데올로기 등에 의해 의도적으로 또는 무의식적으로 뒤틀어 해석되는 왜곡 현상이 발생하였다. 이에 본 연구는 한국사회에서 영웅의 왜곡을 차단하고 영웅의 사회적 기능을 회복해야 한다는 필요성 속에서 영웅의 전통적 개념이 유발하는 문제적 양상과 그에 따른 현상적학 왜곡을 조명하고 영웅의 현대적 의미를 재해석하는 가운데 우리사회로의 (재)소환을 주장할 것이다.

Heroes have been found and worshipped in almost every society around the world since the beginning of the human civilization. That might be the result that heroes and heroism work as sources of meaning and inspiration by being recognized as positive concepts in which noble values are permeated. However, it is not easy to identify and examine who is a hero and what is heroic because the word of hero or heroism, containing lots of various meanings rather than a single one in it, is differently understood for each society as well as each person. So, heroes have been exposed to the distortion of being intentionally exploited or unconsciously misused by political power, popular culture, ideology, etc. In this regard, this article aims to study the phenomenological distortion of heroes which the conventional perceptions cause and to reinterpret them in the modern meaning, and claims to (re)summon them in our society in order to recover their intrinsic social function.
