A study of the perception of secondary English teachers on the transversal competencies

The purpose of this study is to explore the perception of secondary school English teachers in Korea on the introduction and importance to English education of the transversal competence proposed by UNESCO Bangkok. A questionnaire was prepared consisting of five areas and sub-queries by area, including the school’s policy for transversal competence, the importance of curriculum operation, introduction and considerations in enhancing transversal competency, and teacher training for competency education. A total of 57 teachers were survyed, along with 21 middle school and 36 high school, 12 males and 45 females. The survey found that the teachers are aware of the importance of developing students’ competencies. Through analysis of the survey, the researchers would like to make the following policy suggestions: First, it is necessary to focus on developing competencies that can be emphasized in school English classess. Second, according to the survey results, teachers are aware of the importance of competence, but there is a lack of concrete measures to realize this. Third, it is necessary to consider the introduction of competencies in the future English curriculum. We also found that the lack of a system for assessing competency was analyzed. To this end, it is first necessary to select the competencies that can be developed intensively in middle and high school English classes and develop evaluation tools.
