English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners often use the translated writing method to compose extended writing in English. Translated writing method is also an effective way to teach grammatical challenges faced by Korean EFL learners as this method provides learners with context and extended meanings within the text with the time sequence imposed with the past perfect and the simple past tense. The analysis showed that students’ errors in translating certain verbs do not necessarily reflect their performance in grammar quiz or the other way round. Also, when past perfect and perfect tense were simultaneously used in a sentence, students translation performance was not predictable according to their grammar test scores or the overall achievement. Therefore, it would be effective to use the translated teaching method to let the learners understand the time sequence and the use of the past perfect with the past tense in one meaningful sentence rather separating the two or using the conventional grammar drill exercise.
