The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare five 6th grade English textbooks for the 2015 Revised National Curriculum using Coh-Metrix, a web-based language corpus analysis tool. The following measures were selected to analyze the textbooks at both surface level and in-depth level: descriptive counts, word information, standard readability, discourse cohesion, and syntactic complexity. The following summary concludes the research findings. First, based on the results of the descriptive counts, statistically significant differences were found between the textbooks in the number of sentences and words, which resulted in some discrepancies in the length of the texts. Second, there were no significant differences in the frequency of the five parts of speech and content words, whereas the textbooks revealed significant differences in type-token ratio for content words. Third, no significant differences existed in the standard readability shown in the textbooks and they consisted of the texts appropriate to the level of understanding of first graders in the United States. Fourth, according to the in-depth analysis of the texts, there were no significant differences between the textbooks in terms of discourse cohesion and syntactic complexity. Further important implications and suggestions regarding development of the English textbooks were discussed.
