Effects of Disclosure Quality on Correction of Annual Reports

본 연구에서는 공시품질을 산업 및 규모를 조정하지 않은 공시품질, 산업에 따른 차이를 조정한 공시품질, 그리고 산업 및 규모에 따른 차이를 조정한 공시품질로 구분한 후, 이러한 공시품질 유형별로 사업보고서 기재정정에 미치는 영향을 검증하였다. 2000년부터 2008년까지 한국거래소 유가증권 시장에 상장된 비금융기업 가운데, 공시품질 측정을 위한 변수를 구할 수 있는 1,931개의 기업-년 자료를 분석에 사용하였다. 검증결과 산업 및 규모를 조정하지 않은 공시품질, 산업에 따른 차이를 조정한 공시품질, 그리고 산업 및 규모에 따른 차이를 조정한 공시품질 모두 사업보고서 기재정정에 유의적인 음의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 다양한 유형의 공시품질 가운데, 산업평균값조정 공시품질이 사업보고서 기재정정여부에 미치는 효과가 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다.

This study firstly examines whether managers manage the degree of matching of expenses with revenue to the items after the Net Income Before Income TaxExpenses[NIBITE]“ as well as the degree of responding to the revenue cost for the items before the NIBITE in order to manage the overall quality of earnings. The results of the first verification show that the degree of response to revenue cost affects the quality of earnings. Based on this, it is ultimately to verify how “the size of the corporate tax expense corresponding to the Net Income Before Income Tax Expenses[Effective Corporate Tax Rate]”affects earnings management. The research method for this verification uses a multiple regression analysis model after investigating related documents. As a result of the research, the firms with a high level of responding to the revenue cost measured by the previous items NIBITE maintain at a certain level in the income tax expense corresponding to NIBITE. The magnitude of the effective corporate tax rate which is the degree of matching of expenses to NIBITE has a significant negative effect on earnings management. In order to improve the quality of earnings, managers manage the cost corresponding to the NIBITE. When the effective corporate tax rate is high, the incentive for earnings management is low. This implies that the effective corporate tax rate has informational power on earnings management.
