근대 문학과 목격의 서사 : 이상 ｢날개｣ 연구

Modern literature and the narrative of witness : Yi Sang’s “Wings”(Nal-Gae)

이상의 ｢날개｣는 기존 연구들이 수 없이 다뤄온 만큼 새로운 논의 지점을 찾아내기가 어려운 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 이 연구는 1920~30년대 ‘목격’의 시선이라는 시대적 맥락에서 ｢날개｣의 새로운 문제의식을 발견할 수 있다고 보았다. ‘목격’은 근대 남성 주체가 새로운 발견을 통해 ‘앎’을 실천하는 행위이면서, 동시에 여성의 비밀과 사생활의 공간을 ‘관음’하는 행위이기도 하다. 이러한 ‘목격’은 문학 내에서도 작동한다. ｢날개｣는 기본적으로 근대 도시 경성에서 모더니티(Modernity)와 이면에 숨겨진 부도덕성을 동시에 다루고 있는 작품으로 평가받아왔다. 그런데 ｢날개｣가 다루는 도회지의 화려함과 매춘의 부도덕성은 목격의 행위를 통해 제시되고 있다. 이 과정에서 목격이 가진 복합적인 측면이 ｢날개｣에도 적용된다. 도회지의 화려함을 목격하는 것은 새로운 앎을 깨닫는 일이지만, 아내의 매춘을 목격하는 것은 근대 도시 이면의 부도덕성을 확인하는 일인 것이다. 이 연구는 1920~30년대의 목격 담론이 이상의 ｢날개｣에도 스며들어 근대 남성 주체의 시선에서 근대 도시의 양면성을 배치시키며 서사를 진행시키고 있다고 분석하고자 한다. 이와 같은 시도가 이상 연구의 지평을 확장하는데 도움이 되기를 바란다.

Yi-Sang’s “Wings”(Nal-Gae) is a work that is difficult to find new points of discussion as many existing studies have dealt with it. However, the study found a new critical mind in the context of the view of the ‘witness’ of the 1920s and 30s. “witness” is the act of modern male subjects practicing “knowledge” through new discoveries, and at the same time, it is also the act of “voyeurism” the space of women’s secrets and privacy. This ‘witness’ also works within literature. “Wings” has basically been regarded as a work that deals with ‘Modernity’ and a hidden immorality in modern city Gyeongseong. However, the splendor of the city’s urban district and immorality of prostitution, which is covered by the “Wing”, are presented through ‘witness’. In this process, the complex aspects of ‘witness’ are also applied to “Wings”. While witnessing the splendor of the city is a realization of new knowledge, witnessing the prostitution of a wife is a confirmation of the immorality behind a modern city. The study suggests that ‘witness’ discourse from the 1920s and 30s permeates “Wings”, placing the ambivalence of modern cities from the perspective of modern male subjects and proceeding with the narrative. I hope such attempts will help expand the prospect of Yi-Sang’s study.
