위키백과를 활용한 대학생 영어 쓰기 평가

Wikipedia-based writing assessment for college students

The purpose of this study aims to investigate the effect of integrating Wikipedia project with college English writing instruction through a blended teaching approach. This blended approach consisted of one-third of a semester of classroom instruction and two-thirds of a semester combining students-led Wikipedia project. The subjects were 60 college students majoring in various subjects at a university in Korea participating in a 17-week Media-based English class. Students who participated in the study learned how to edit Wikipedia at the beginning of the semester, followed by writing English Wikipedia documents in the order of group tasks and individual tasks. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were employed in the study. The findings suggest that although there are some restrictions, incorporating Wikipedia project in learning and testing can be meaningful and effective for college-level English writing class. The students became very proud of themselves as they transformed from knowledge absorber to knowledge producer. Above all, students have gained confidence in English composition by writing English Wikipedia documents. Finally, the findings may provide useful instructional strategies for teachers of EFL English writing courses.
