숭실전문의 과학기술자들

The Scientists of Union Christian College : Establishing the Departments of Sciences and Agriculture and Their Graduates’ Entering Universities

일제강점기 숭실전문학교는 미국 리버럴아츠 칼리지에 대한 잘못된 이해로 문과 중심의 교육을 시행해온(인문교양대학 유형) 것으로 알려져 왔다. 이는 라이벌 미션학교였던 연희전문학교가 이과 교육에도 중점을 둔 것과 크게 대비되었다. 그러나 숭실전문이 이과 교육에 관심을 기울이지 않았다는 그간의 이해는 실제 사실과 크게 어긋난다. 오히려 초기부터 문과와 이과의 균형적 교육을 위해 애써왔고(문리과대학 유형) 전공분야로 이학과와 뒤이어 농학과를 개설하기도 했다. 선교사뿐만 아니라 조선인 과학기술자들을 교수인력으로 충원하기 위해 꾸준히 노력했고 실제로 상당수의 우수한 과학기술자들을 초빙했다. 졸업생들 중에는 학교에서 배운 전공을 살려 미국이나 일본의 대학으로 진학해 전문 과학기술자로 성장한 경우도 적지 않았다. 일제강점기에 활동한 이공학과 농학계 대학의 조선인 졸업자들 중 숭실전문 출신이 차지하는 비율은 약 10%에 달했다. 그만큼 숭실전문은 한국의 과학기술 역사에서도 새롭게 평가해야 할 만큼 중요한 위치를 차지했던 것이다.

In the Japanese colonial period, Union Christian College in Korea was known for implementing humanities-centered education based on an incorrect understanding of the liberal arts colleges in the U.S.. This was a sharp contrast to its rival missionary college, Chosun Christian College, which emphasized on education in natural sciences. However, the understanding of that Union Christian College did not pay attention to natural sciences education is quite contradictory to the facts. Rather, the College made efforts to carry out education that balanced both humanities and natural sciences (the college of liberal arts and sciences type) and even opened the department of sciences and then the department of agriculture as part of the major fields of study. Union Christian College persevered to increase faculty members with not only foreign missionaries but also Korean scientists and succeeded to hire a substantial number of excellent scientists. Among Union Christian College graduates, there was quite a number of cases in which they became professional scientists by studying abroad in a U.S. or Japanese universities to pursue further studies. Union Christian College graduates reached approximately ten percent of the Korean graduates of the colleges of science and engineering and of agriculture during the Japanese colonial period. To that extent, Union Christian College occupied a significant position in the Korean history of science and technology that should be evaluated anew.
