안재홍은 파시즘 자체에 대하여는 비판적 입장을 견지하면서도 사회주의자들의 파시즘 비판이 곧 민족주의 비판으로까지 나아가는 것에 견제하고자 하였으며, 동시에 사회경제적 조건이 미숙한 가운데 제기되는 사회주의 운동노선의 조급성이 파시즘이라는 반동을 불러들이는 역기능을 한다는 점을 강조하였다. 서강백은 파시즘과 민족주의는 구분될 수 없다고 하면서 안재홍을 ‘조선형 파시스트’로 규정하였다. 안재홍이 파시즘은 부르주아적 독재의 형태라 파악하였지만, 단순히 금융자본의 정치형태가 아니라 금융자본의 제국주의적 팽창과 연관된 체제라 보아야 한다고 하며, 안재홍의 세계관적 기초를 관념론이라 비판하였다. 나아가 이탈리아에서 혁명이 실패한 것은 조급한 사회주의 운동으로 인한 것이 아니라 강력한 지도력을 갖춘 사회주의 정당이 부재했기 때문이라 비판하였다.
