경북지역 향촌지배층과 전기의병장들의 동학농민군 인식과 대응

The Town Dominant Class and the Early Righteous Army Captains Recognition on Donghak Peasant Army and the Responses in Gyeongbuk Province

이 글은 경북지역 향촌지배층과 전기의병장들이 동학농민군에 대하여 어떻게 인식하고 대응했는가를 연구한 것이다. 인식은 향촌지배층의 경우 동학농민군에 가담하기도 했지만 ‘이단’으로 배척하는 경우가 많았다. 대응은 피난을 가 동학농민군을 피하는 경우가 많았고, 청년을 모아 무장을 하여 마을을 지키거나 향약(鄕約)과 동규(洞規)를 시행하여 마을을 지키고자 하였다. 또 반동학농민군을 결성하여 동학농민군 진압에 나선 경우도 많았다. 여기에 참여한 계층은 신향(新鄕)이 대부분이었다. 전기의병장은 향촌지배층에 속하는 이들이 대부분이다. 그러나 동학농민군 대응에 있어서 향촌지배층과는 다른 결과가 나왔다. 첫째, 동학 입도 사례가 없었다. 이것은 자료의 한계 때문에 밝혀지지 못한 것일 수 있다. 그러므로 나중에라도 자료가 발견되어 밝혀질 수 있기를 기대한다. 둘째, 반동학농민군 활동에 참여하지 않았다. 의병장은 그 지역에서 영향력을 가진 인물이었기 때문에 반동학농민군을 결성할 수 있는 기반을 가지고 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그들은 반동학농민군 결성에 나서지 않았다. 이 연구로써 “을미의병 지도부=반동학농민군”이라는 일부의 주장을 반박할 수 있었다. 즉, 경북지역 전기의병장은 반동학농민군이 아니었던 것이다.

This study examined the way in which the town dominant class and captains of the Early Righteous Armies recognized and responded to the Donghak Peasant Army. Referring to the recognition of the Donghak Peasant Army, some of the town dominant class joined in the activities of the Donghak Peasant Army, but others regarded the Donghak Peasant Army as unlawful and antisocial, and rejected it. In relation to their responses to the Donghak Peasant Army, most of the dominant class fled to avoid the Donghak Peasant Army, and some defended their towns with their own armed young people, and also administered town regulations, Hayngyak(鄕約) and village rules, Donggyu(洞規) to keep their towns and village in order. Others organized an anti-Donghak Peasant Army and suppressed the Donghak Peasant Army, and most of those were Sinhyang people newly admitted into the Yangban class, the nobility. Captains of the Early Righteous Armies mostly belonged to the town dominant class. However, they responded differently from other town dominant people to the Donghak Peasant Army. First, there were no cases in which they joined the Donghak Peasant Army, which may be due to the limitation of the materials related to this. With further research, some documents might be expected to be found that show their activities in support of the Donghak Peasant Army. Next, they did not join in any activities against the Donghak Peasant Army. Captains of the Righteous Armies were fairly influential in their towns and villages, and surely had enough power to organize an anti-Donghak Peasant Army. Nevertheless, they did not organize any army against the Donghak Peasant Army. Therefore, this study can refute the contention that leaders of the Eulmi Righteous Army were against the Donghak Peasant Army. That is, captains of the Early Righteous Armies in the area of Gyeongbuk Province were not opposed to the Donghak Peasant Army.
