일본 홋카이도 아바시리에 위치한 아바시리(网走)감옥은 1890년, 중국 대련에 위치한 뤼순(旅順)감옥은 1902년, 한국 서울에 위치한 서대문감옥은 1907년 대만자이에 위치한 자이(嘉義)감옥은 1919년에 각각 설립되었다. 19세기말~20세기 초 일본 및 일본의 식민지에 설립된 이 감옥들은 건축양식이든 관리방식이든 나아가 발전방향에 매우 긴밀한 관계가 있고, 일본의 특징도 갖기도 한다. 따라서 일본식민통치 역사, 특히 옥정(獄政)역사를 이해하는 데 도움을 준다.
Abashiri Prison in Japan was established in 1890, Lüshun Prison in China in 1902, Seo-dai-moon Prison in Korea in 1907, Jai Prison in Chinese Taipei in 1919. These prisons, established in Japan or Japan s colonies from the end of 19th century to the early of 20th century, affected one another in architecture and management, and got effected from Japan. So, it help us understand history of colonial rule of Japan.
