A Study on the Life and Anti-Japanese Activities of Kwak Han-so

Kwak Han-so(1882~1927) was student under prominent anti-Japanese figure Choi Ik-hyeon, and devoted to him for his life. Kwak passed away at age of 46. He served his big-named teacher only for five or six years. But these time was critical period in Korea’s history. Because it’s status as a independence nation was under serious threat by Japanese Empire. Kwak Han-so was shocked by conclusion of Eulsa treaty which basically stated annihilation of Korea’s Independence. Shortly after the treaty was concluded, Kwak joined anti-Japanese movement which was mainly led by his teacher Choi and assisted him. January of 1906, He visited big-shots in the region of Gongju, Onyang, Asan and Cheonan for Nosung Kwollisa meeting. Also he was one of 29 signer. After, Choi decided to raise righteous Army against Japanese, Kwak took care of procedure and made contact with comrades in each reason. Also he wrote significant paper regarding justice of the movement, such as appeal to King Gojong, criticizing Japanese prime minister Yito or He wrote a letter to Chinese asking for help. Kwak Han-so made close contact with Ko Seok-jin, Yang Jae-hae, Choi Jae-hak, Ahn Byeong-chan, Park Chang-ro, Lee Sae-young to mobilizing Righteous Army. In 1906, 4th of June Choi raised an army In Cheolla Province but failed because of collapse of the camp Until late 1906, Kwak Han-so stayed in Choi’s house in Jeong San, made an effort to re-organize Righeous Army in Choong’cheong province. However, 17th of November, leaders were arrested by Japanese military police and their efforts turned to vain.
