  • 47

The Petition Movement to Paris was done in Hoseo(湖西) area led by commander of the righteous army Kim bok-han(金福漢). Although it was painful to go hand in hand with the West, he decided to send the document to the Paris Peace Conference to demand the independence of Korea. Kim bok-han received the signatures of Confucian scholars nearby who created the Petition Movement to Paris. And he tried to dispatch the document by sending Hwang il-seong, Yi young-gyu, Jeon yong-hak and other disciples to Seoul so that it might sent to Paris via Im gyeong-ho. Confucian scholars of the Youngnam(嶺南) area were also preparing the Petition Movement to Paris for the same purpose. Accordingly, movement of the two areas had been incorporated. Confucians were arrested by the Japanese police because of it and suffered in prison. Hoseo version document of Petition to Paris did not currently exist. However, some point is could be known. According to this, Hoseo version document was asking Japanese criminal act of assassination of the Empress and Emperor Gojong, and it meant that they want to restore the Joseon Dynasty. Hoseo local Confucian scholars were criticized from the Hwaseo(華西) school confucian scholars for requesting cooperation of the Western Empire. However, they argued that it was a strategy to use the Western Empire to save the Korean from the Japanese government. The Petition Movement to Paris of Hoseo area was significant in the sense that it tried to overcome Fundamentalism of Confucianism of Korea in the end of the 19th Century. In addition, it was also meaningful that the movement was proceeded with Youngnam area confucians which meant the integration of area of Noron(老論) of Hoseo area and Nanin(南人) of Youngnam area.
