The Establishment and Character of the Zoo Purpose-built by Japanese Empire during the Korean Empire Period

The first modern zoo in Korea was built inside Chang-gyeong-gung Palace during the Korean Empire Period, when was struggling against the invasion of Japanese imperialism. The zoo which was not only a modern enlightenment facilities but also a show space of modern civilization power was built in the Korean Empire, where was a target area of the World Powers. The reason why the zoo was built inside Chang-gyeong-gung palace was the purpose of giving comport to Emperor Sunjong, successor to the throne of Emperor Gojong who was abdicate the throne by the Japanese empire. Chang-gyeong-gung palace was next to Chang-gyeong-gung palace where Emperor Sunjong resided. The zoo was built by Japanese empire and was opened to the public next year, November 1909. It was not easy to open the palace where the king reside. But Japanese empire pushed ahead with opening the palace to the public for “the people” against the opposite opening of the palace. On this thesis, I tried to research critically whether the zoo of Korean Empire was a public facilities to justification of Japanese empire through the analysis of establishment process and management status. Besides, I also intended to analyze the feature of the zoo during Korean Empire by comparison of Japanese zoo. The zoo of Japanese empire was established for the symbol of prestige and built inside the palace some times. But more recently, the palace was opened to public. The management of zoo between Korean and Japanese are quite different. Based on difference between Korean and Japanese. It is considered that Japanese empire established the zoo in Chang-gyeong-gung palace for the purpose of propaganda of justification for the invasion of Korean Empire both inside and outside. Actually, visitors of zoo was almost Japanese and Korean of high class, not public.
