공존의 위험성

The Danger of Coexistence : Focused on the Story of Samson

사사기의 순환 구조에 따르면 이스라엘은 악행을 저질렀고, 여호와의 진노를 샀다. 여호와가 이스라엘을 대적의 손에 넘기시면 이스라엘은 여호와께 부르짖었는데, 삼손 이야기에는 유독 부르짖음에 대한 기록이없다. 이스라엘이 회개하지 않고 대적의 통치 아래서 더 이상 여호와를 찾지 않게 된 것이다. 따라서 본 연구논문은 왜 이스라엘이 여호와께 부르짖지 않았는가에 대하여 분석하는 것을 목적으로 하며, 이를 위해서 삼손 이야기가 기록된 사사기 13-16장의 본문에 대한 내용 분석과 개념 분석 등을 시도하였다. 이방인들과의 혼인은 신명기 7장에서 명령하신 것 같이 이스라엘 백성으로 하여금 여호와를 버리고 다른 신들을 섬기도록 만든다. 마지막 사사인 삼손은 그 자신이 사사로 세움을 받았음에도 불구하고, 사사에 어울리지 않게 블레셋 여인과 혼인하고 다른 이방 여인들과 관계를 갖는등의 지탄받아 마땅한 행동을 일삼았다. 결국 이스라엘 백성을 블레셋의 통치로부터 완전하게 구원하지도 못하고 시작만 했던 것이다. 마치 사사기의 순환 구조에서처럼 반복적으로 여호와를 버리고 다른 신들을 섬기는 악행을 일삼았던 이스라엘은 삼손의 모습을 통해서 상징적으로 묘사되고 있다. 삼손 이야기는 지도자가 누구냐에 상관없이 이스라엘 백성 자신들이 회개하고 하나님만 섬기는 언약 백성의 모습을 보여주어야 한다는 것을 말해 준다. 이스라엘의 진정한 적은 공존하는 이방 족속들 뿐만 아니라, ‘족외혼’을 통한 ‘이스라엘과 하나님의 관계’의 단절이었다. ‘공존’은 이 관계 단절’을 부추기는 유혹의 환경이었기 때문에 그 위험성이 상존하고 있었다. 바로 ‘공존의 위험성’이었다.

Although the title ‘Judge’ was never used in the Book of Judges, Samson was the last Judge within the Book. The most surprising aspect in terms of Judges’ cyclical structure in the story of Samson is the lack of Israel’s crying to YHWH, that is the stage 3 in the cycle. Furthermore, YHWH sent the messenger to tell the wife of Manoah that she would bear a son and he will begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines. This picture of ‘futuristic Judge’ is very different from the usual picture of ‘present Judges’. The first stage of Israel’s doing evil resulted from marriage with the Canaanites, that is, exogamy. The second stage of YHWH’s handing Israel over to the enemy is to make Israel cry to YHWH, a stage when Israel’s repentance begins its return to YHWH. However, Israel did not cry to YHWH in the time of Samson. This is because Israel did not repent and wanted to live under the rule of the Philistines and worship their god, Dagon. Therefore, YHWH initiated the process of deliverance and designated Samson even before he was born. However, Samson was interested in marrying a Philistine woman and had inappropriate relations with other non-Israelite women. Judge Samson committed a great sin, exogamy just like Israel habitually did in the past. The life of Samson symbolizes the lives of the Israelites who worshiped other gods instead of YHWH. The main reason for Israel’s idolatry was nothing but exogamy and this exogamy was possible under the circumstance of co-existence with non-Israelites. Samson only began to deliver Israel from the Philistines and it was left to others to complete the job. The story of Samson shows us that the danger of coexistence is great because it causes Israel to marry to the Canaanites and to go astray from YHWH and worship other gods.
