In this study, FSW experiments using a commercial machining center (instead of an FSW-only experimental device) were conducted on the most widely used A6061-T6 alloy among aluminum alloys to assess the welding possibilities with this alloy. More specifically, the study aimed to establish a correlation between the tensile strength characteristics of welds when the transfer velocity of the tool (a representative process variable that is highly correlated with productivity) changes. Test results showed that under all conditions, the weld surface was not defective and the tensile strength of the welds exceeded 70% over the base material. Results also showed that the highest tensile strength was achieved under the 300-mm/min supply speed condition of the tool and with 85% of the base material. The study thus revealed that the greater the transfer velocity of the tool in the friction cross-plate of the A6061-T6 alloy, the greater was the tensile strength of the welds.
