Adopting Academic Departments to Universities of Postcolonial Korea : A Historical-sociological Analysis

  • 9

This study attempts to explore the historical contexts and implications of adopting academic department system to university of postcolonial Korea. As one of university’s academic structures, academic department is the central building block-the molecule-of the American university. It is the institutional link between the university and the discipline, and the departmentalization was a product of the historical movement toward academic reform that produced the American university itself. During colonial period, the high education system and academic field of Korea were seriously affected by the Metropole, Japan. The high education system and academic field of pre-war Japan have a dual system which consists of a few of Imperial Universities-based on the chair holding system-and many practical Colleges-based on occupational education sections-, hierarchically. That is to say, the high education system and academic field of colonial Korea have different academic structure compared to academic department of American university. Then, what are the consequences of adopting academic department system to university of postcolonial Korea? In this study, the historical contexts and implications of adopting academic department are examined from a historical-sociological perspective.
