The Lifeworld of a Farmer and the Yushin System(Revitalizing Reforms System)

  • 26

This study investigates the situation of rural area and the inner world of farmers during the Yushin period through the diary of a farmer. The writer of the diary was born in Daegok-ri, Cheongbuk-myeon, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeongi-do in 1929. Right after the Liberation he attended a middle school in Seoul. After serving his military duties during the Korean War, he retired to his hometown and became a farmer. His diary starts on 1 January, 1959. He opposed to the fraudulent election of the Syngman Rhee government, supported the 4·19 Revolution and assumed a critical attitude toward the 5·16 Military Coup. Despite his political position, he was obliged to support the Democratic Republican Party for the development of his hometown which lagged behind. As the alienation of rural area became severe, he gave up joining the opposition party, and attached himself to the ruling party. It was the economic benefits that made him choose the Democratic Republican Party. His political attitude under the Yushin System was deceptive, double-faced. Outwardly he seemed to support the Democratic Republican Party, but inwardly he criticized sharply the undemocratic way of the Democratic Republican Party. This double face was his strategy of life under the authoritarian rule.
