The Kidnapping of Former President Kim Dae-jung and Two Types of Korea-Japan Solidarity through Analysis of Diplomatic Documents

  • 43

This research treats the kidnapping of former president Kim Dae-jung in view of Korea-Japan solidarity through analysis of diplomatic documents released by the Korean government in 2006. The main object of our analysis is the beginning aspects consisting of the kidnapping and return of Kim Dae-jung. Previous researches were focused on the political collusion between the Korean government and the Japanese government. However, this research takes notice of the solidarity of civil society and tries to newly shed light on the affair through analysis of conflicts between the governments and the civil societies of Korea and Japan. In the affair of Kim’s kidnapping worked two types of Korea-Japan solidarity: solidarity between the two governments and solidarity between the two civil societies. It was the japanese media that made the solidarity of civil societies. The Japanese media spotted the Korean Central Intelligence Agency(KCIA) as the culprit from the initial stage of the kidnapping, and brought into relief the fact that the kidnapping of Kim Dae-jung was an infringement of sovereignty. Thus the Japanese media led the campaign to save Kim’s life. The civic alliance, pressing the Japanese police to investigate the truth, enabled to find out the truth that the KCIA was concerned in the affair. The civic alliance cracked the Korea-Japan governmental alliance that had been trying to hide the culprits and settle the incident in the early stage. Thus the civic alliance contributed to save the life and stop the confinement of Kim Dae-jung. As the civil society raised a question violently, the settlement of the affair could be half success.
