한국전쟁기 맥아더사령부의 삐라 선전 정책

Leaflet Propaganda Policy by MacArthur s Command during the Korean War

  • 13

Since World War I, total war became a world-wide phenomenon. This kind of change made a concept of ‘the front line and the rear’ meaningless. In addition, propaganda was even made against the civilians of the enemy. In particular, the propaganda has developed into a psychological warfare. The Korean War was a total war as well. The US army launched psychological warfare against North Korea and China. In the psychological warfare, a variety of communication methods - leaflet drops, radio broadcasts, etc. - were used. This study has attempted to investigate the leaflet propaganda policy launched by General Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War through an analysis on the resources in the MacArthur Memorial. Specifically, the data from June 1950 to April 1951 when the general was dismissed were examined. Despite a little time lag, the Korean War developed into a protracted war since his dismissal. Hence, this study has investigated the leaflet propaganda policy during General Douglas MacArthur s time as the commander of UN forces in Korea. In the beginning of the Korean War, the leaflet propagandized the UN forces’ entry into the war and help from the liberal world. After the success of the Incheon Landing Operation, it focused on the unification of the Korean peninsula and surrender from North Korean army. Since the Chinese army entered into the war, the leaflet was propagandized China’s exploitation of North Korea to raise resistance against China in North Korea. Since the war situation became serious after Chinese army’s participation in the war, the Douglas MacArthur distributed leaflets which hinted a possibility of a total war. In fact, the Korean War revealed an ideological war as another aspect of a total war.
