조선 군사력에 대한 明의 인식

Ming Dynasty Officials’ Perception of Joseon’s Military Power

조선에 대한 명나라 식자들의 평가와 인식 정도는 명의 대조선 외교와 군사정책의 전략과방향을 설정하는데 직간접적으로 영향을 미친다. 따라서 조선과 국경을 마주하고 있는 명나라식자들이 조선을 어떻게 인식했는가에 대한 부분은 ‘文’뿐만 아니라 ‘武’의 입장도 주목해야한다. 본고에서는 그간의 연구를 수렴하면서 15~16세기 어떠한 요소들이 착종되어 조선 군사력 이미지가 조성되었는지 짚어보았다. 첫째 명은 조선을 ‘고구려의 후예’로 인식하며, 우월한 군사력을 이어받았을 것으로 보았다. 명 사신들도 조선을 고구려의 후예로 보며 사행길에 소감을 남겼다. 둘째 명나라와 여진은조선이 片箭이라는 강력한 무기를 가지고 궁술에 능하여, 명의 요동 군사나 여진족들보다조선의 군사력이 우위에 있다고 보았다. 셋째, 16세기 중반 조선 조정은 일본의 눈치를 보지않고 ‘寧波의 亂’에 연루된 일본인 범죄자를 명나라에 압송하였는데, 이 일도 조선 군사력이일본 우위에 있다고 믿게 했다. 조선 군사력에 대한 이미지와 기대는 1592년 임진왜란 초반 일본의 거침없는 공격에 무너지는 조선의 모습을 보고 무너져 내렸다. 임진왜란 이후 명의 조선에 대한 군사력 인식은달라졌지만, 15~16세기 동안 명은 조선을 예의를 갖춘 문명국은 물론, 군사력도 갖춘 나라로보았던 것이다.

The evaluation and perception of the Ming dynasty s intellectuals about Joseon directly or indirectly influenced setting up the strategy and direction of Ming dynasty’s diplomatic and military policy. Therefore, regarding the perception of Ming intellectuals who face the border with Joseon, it is necessary to examine the position of “military(武)” as well as “civil(文)” officials. This paper summarizes the previous studies, and examines what elements of the 15th and 16th centuries were collected and created the image of military power of Joseon. First, Ming dynasty recognized Joseon as a “descendant of Goguryeo” and believed that Joseon had inherited the superior military power of Goguryeo. Envoys of Ming dynasty left their impressions which shared this belief during their mission. Second, the Ming dynasty and Jurchen (女眞) regarded that the Joseon s military power was superior to those of the Liaodong military force of Ming and Jurchen, as Joseon was good at archery with a powerful weapon called Pyeonjeon (片箭). Third, Ming dynasty considered Joseon s military power to be superior to that of Japan through the “Ningbo Incident” in the mid-16th century. This is because Joseon sent a Japanese criminal involved in the Ningbo Incident to Ming dynasty without paying attention to the Japan’s reaction. However, the image and expectation of Ming dynasty’s officials for the military power of Joseon shattered during the Imjin War in 1592. Although this war changed the Ming dynasty intellectuals’ perception of Joseon, however, during the 15th and 16th centuries, Ming dynasty viewed Joseon as a civilized country with courtesy as well as country with military power.
