The Wake Island Conference and the MacArthur Command’s Intelligence Recognition about the Chinese People’s Army entry into the Korean War

  • 23

Up to now, it has not solved the problem that the MacArthur command’s recognition about the intervention of China toward the Korean War. Reportedly, someone insisted that Douglas MacArthur had already known China intervention in the Korean War, but he deliberately ignored the fact. It was called ‘MacArthur Conspiracy’ Around the recall of MacArthur in April 1951, this problem was became increasingly controversial. That is to say, in the Wake island conference at October 15, 1950, MacArthur was criticized that he intentionally downplays the possibility of the Chinese People’s Army entry into the Korean War. It was memoirs of the retired General of Chung Il-Kwon that raised the question. According to his journal, he could confirm with the President Syngman Rhee and General Douglas MacArthur’s exchange of letters. But if we accurately analyzed the documents, we didn’t verify ‘MacArthur Conspiracy’. In the Wake Island Conference, serious discussion was rehabilitation and relief of Korea, Japanese Peace treaty and Problems of Taiwan, not Chinese Intervention. It was not easy to estimate that MacArthur contemplated expanded the Korean War to the China mainland with deceiving the Truman administration. After all, MacArthur misconceived China’s intention, because of his racial prejudice and underestimation of China’s military capability. This misperception was due to the MacArthur’s command and the Washington official’s misjudgment of that intelligence. Finally this misconception changed the Korean War to the international war.
