본 논문은 한국대중가요 작곡가 백영호의 작품분석 연구이다. 백영호의 생애와 작품활동을 파악하고 작품 분류를 통해 작품을 분석하여 한국대중가요사에 의미 있는 자료를 제공하는 것을 연구목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 먼저 백영호의 생애와 교류했던 음악인, 음악 활동 내용, 발표된 음악, 저서와 수상 내용 등의 업적을 기술하였다. 또한, 작품 445곡을 시대별, 장르별, 작곡가별, 가수별로 분류하여 백영호 작품을 살펴보았다. 백영호는 험난한 한국의 근현대사를 살아낸 사람으로 그의 음악적 활동은 한국대중가요 역사와 그 맥락을 같이하고 있다. 1964년 <동백 아가씨>를 발표하여 우리나라 대중가요사에 첫 백만 장 이상 판매된 음반의 기록을 세웠고 작곡가로 최고의 전성기를 누렸던 1960년 중반부터 1970년대 중반까지 가요뿐 아니라 영화, 드라마 주제가 부문에서 활발하게 활동하며 100여 곡이 넘는 히트곡을 만들어냈다. 백영호는 당대의 많은 작사가와 가수들과 협업하였는데 특히 작사가 한산도, 가수 이미자와 가장 많은 곡을 발표하였다. 백영호는 침체되었던 트로트의 부흥을 촉발한 주역으로 1960년대 트로트의 전성기와 한국가요사의 황금기를 이끄는 데 일조하였다. 본 논문은 그동안 연구되지 않았던 백영호의 작품을 우리나라 최초로 수집·분류하여 작품을 분석하고 한국대중가요사 발전에 의미 있는 자료를 제공하였다는 데 그 의의가 있다.
This study aimed to analyze the works of Paik Young-ho, a Korean popular music composer. It reviewed the life and works of Paik Young-ho, analyzed his work through work classification, and provided meaningful data as a contribution to Korean pop music history. First, the study described the musicians with whom Paik Young-ho had relationships during his life, as well as his achievements, such as his musical activities, published songs, books, and awards. The study classified and analyzed Paik’s 445 works by era, genre, lyricist, and singer. As an experienced person of modern-day Korean history, Paik’s musical activities are part of the history of Korean pop music. He released ‘Dongbaek agassi’, which was the first work to generate over one million record sales in Korean popular music. From the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, when he enjoyed his best days as a composer, he was active in the genre of movies and dramas as well as Korean pop music, producing more than 100 hit songs. He collaborated with many lyricists and singers of the time, with Hansando being the lyricist who collaborated the most and Lee Mi-ja the singer who collaborated the most. He was the main trigger for the revival of trot music. He also contributed to the Golden Age of Korean pop music and the glory days of trot music in the 1960s by composing numerous famous songs. This study is significant for being the first study in Korea to collect, classify and analyze the works of Paik young-ho and thus provides significant data towards developing the history of Korean popular music.
